This is kind of fucked up. I mean, you have an unsubstantiated claim from one employee that you haven't verified and hasn't done you any harm. But you feel hurt, because you've been going there for eight years. Okay, I get that. But then you're going to use the situation to hit on said employee? Really weird, dude.
go in there with your backpack full of stuff sold in the store, but bought elsewhere with a reciept. then randomly move around as much stuff as possible on the shelves.

I specifically wear my backpack to supermarkets - its what I put my shopping in. Its easier than carrying plastic bags.

It might be a store policy thing, I dunno. But usually I'm told they're not shop lifting until they pass the point of sale or try and to leave the store with item(s) without going through the registers. Heck, there's been plenty of times we've simply let them get away, gotten their license plate number then had the police go meet them at home.
Propita is right in a legal sense. It's shoplifting if you take something without intending to pay for it even if you haven't left the store. However, as a practical matter, it's far easier to prove that you didn't intend to pay for it if you actually left and didn't pay for it, since you're legally allowed to put items in a backpack or purse if you want to as long as you remember to pay for it.

Honestly... Having worked in retail, the managers would direct us to eye anyone a little closer, who came in with a backpack... That's natural and prudent.. I think what's a possibility here, is that the cashier may have overheard a manager telling someone to keep an eye on people with backpacks... Or even just wonder aloud as you were checking out one day "if he's got anything in that backpack?" and she has just taken a leap to the next level, which is to say they think you're stealing stuff..

Yes, I wear my backpack or bag nearly always when I leave the house.
^As do I. I was even thinking of buying a backpack specifically for grocery shopping -- but then, I live in a city and walk to and from the grocery store. I suspect dream drives everywhere, and so doesn't need a bag.
Why do women carry purses into a store? Same question, basically. Woman with a big purse, would you automatically think "shoplifter". And yeah, I've taken my bag into a theater and seen plenty of people bring backpacks into a theater.
The only thing I don't like is those HUGE backpacks that look like someone is packing out for a trip up Everest.
I used to carry a bread-bag all the time: Camera, notepads, voice recorder, pens, phone, ID and passes. It was a part of the job, and I took it everywhere with me. Actually I need to get back into to, since I'm back into carrying cameras.
It's a pity that carrying a purse is only socially acceptable for women. Sure, a guy can carry a bag but if it's too small it looks too dainty or purse like and they are less likely to. I've taken to carrying totes rather than smaller purses. Right now I carry a canvas bag that has a smaller purse inside, and assorted items. I can easily drop my iPad and reusable grocery bags in there to carry around. I'd imagine that the plastic bag ban here is a lot more difficult in men because they aren't used to carrying anything around so remembering reusable bags is a pain.
I used to specifically carry a backpack when grocery shopping in my college days. We lived in the city, didn't have a car, and wanted to maximize what we could carry. Everyone filled up their backpacks and then carried items in their hands as well.

Weirdly enough, I've never even been asked to open it for the cashier or anyone else to look inside whether it was really empty. Then again, they'd be busy if they did that to everyone wearing a backpack.
I also suspect that security people often don't really care. I was once on my way home from Schlagball practise when I remembered I needed a few items from the super market. I was carrying two large Schlagball bats and thought they'd never let me in that way. So I asked the security guy if I could leave the bats with him for the duration but he said I could just take them in. I didn't even raise any eyebrows with the other customers. However, hilarity ensued when I had to balance my backpack and the two bats while paying at the register while finishing explaining the game to the alcoholic standing in line in front of me.
