Hypothetically Speaking, What if this movie really takes off?

It won't matter if critics like or hate it; most mainstream critics tend to look down their nose at Star Trek movies since they cater to a certain fanbase rather than to a general audience
This isn't your run of the mill Trek movie, it wasn't conceived or executed to be that, which is kinda the point of this whole affair to begin with, break the mold of what's expected out of a Trek film both artistically and fiscally. All bets are off, this is a new day in Trekdom.

I totally agree with you, but some of the more hardened critics out there aren't going to see it that way. Oh, sure, they might remark that this movie is Star Trek's attempt to reach beyond the fanbase that keeps it alive, but to them, it'll still be, at its core, a Star Trek movie, and it'll be shot through a jaded prism.

I know quite a few people who have never been Trek fans, or casual fans at the very most, who are genuinely interested in this movie, and that gives me hope. Some are going because they like Abrams' past works, others are going because they're impressed by the fresh-faced cast, and at least one person said to me something along the lines of, "As long as it's not like the Trekkie stuff that's been on TV the past few years, I'll give it a shot".

If this movie can make Star Trek a bankable, viable property again, we may be looking at the franchise's renaissance, and I can't think of anything more wonderful for us fans.

Yes, a Star Trek that feels more like Star Wars is so fucking wonderful.

Matt --

If I said I had a viable plan for feeding hungry children in need, would you have something spiteful and hateful to say about that, too?

Happy New Year.

...as for the topic:

I can see ST:12 taking place during the TOS era. Perhaps even take a classic TOS episode and put a new spin on it for the big screen -- such as The Doomsday Machine.

Huh? If by feel like Star Wars you mean come across as fun, and with forward momentum I'll take that over the run of the mill expected by the numbers Trek film. In detail I see nothing in the trailer that causes me to think "Star Wars".

My sense of the 'buzz' is that this film and that it has JJ Abrams name on it has somewhat surmounted the regular critics and actually is at risk of taking more of a beating from 'hardcore fans' who luckily are a tiny group among an already tiny fanbase.

I think they'd go for an unseen early 5YM adventure that slots between known episodes of TOS, and I can also see them taking the opportunity to "introduce" a few new characters to the mix: particularly the arrivals of Janice Rand, Christine Chapel and maybe Mr Kyle? And perhaps a reference to Joanna McCoy?

^^My vote is for Kevin Riley.

I always liked that guy for some reason. Maybe it was because he acted like and "average guy who happened to be in space".

If you tried to propose this plan while speaking on my behalf, yes I would.
This Star Trek fan does not find ANYTHING wonderful about JJ Abrams' piece of garbage.

What would happen if the movie takes off? We'll be subjected to Abrams and Cohorts and their idiotic form of numbering in Star Trek 012: So Very Tired.

If it really "takes off", I guess that confirms it was built on the Earth after all. :p

I would much rather they leave the first five year mission to tos and recast a second five year mission after tos with older acters.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. One man's ceiling is another man's floor. Never... walk with scissors?

That would be pretty lame, really.

A Star Trek that feels more like Star Wars is infinitely better than the Trek we have now...which is none at all. ;)

I see no evidence of it being 'mindless crap'. It'll probably be a lot smarter than NEM or INS. As a matter of fact, I expect it to be the smartest trek we've gotten in some time...

And also a huge budget again.

Now, Back on topic:

I expect that they'll make an animated series, which is par for the course with big blockbusters (Transformers and Iron Man come to mind).

As for the sequel, I have no idea what they'll do. But I'm sure it won't be a return to the status quo.

None that I recall, but that's no excuse for Abrams to turn Trek into Star Wars.

He's not. The only one who seems to think that is you. I suppose you're right and the rest of the universe is wrong?? Not bloody likely.
