This isn't your run of the mill Trek movie, it wasn't conceived or executed to be that, which is kinda the point of this whole affair to begin with, break the mold of what's expected out of a Trek film both artistically and fiscally. All bets are off, this is a new day in Trekdom. It won't matter if critics like or hate it; most mainstream critics tend to look down their nose at Star Trek movies since they cater to a certain fanbase rather than to a general audience

I totally agree with you, but some of the more hardened critics out there aren't going to see it that way. Oh, sure, they might remark that this movie is Star Trek's attempt to reach beyond the fanbase that keeps it alive, but to them, it'll still be, at its core, a Star Trek movie, and it'll be shot through a jaded prism.
I know quite a few people who have never been Trek fans, or casual fans at the very most, who are genuinely interested in this movie, and that gives me hope. Some are going because they like Abrams' past works, others are going because they're impressed by the fresh-faced cast, and at least one person said to me something along the lines of, "As long as it's not like the Trekkie stuff that's been on TV the past few years, I'll give it a shot".
If this movie can make Star Trek a bankable, viable property again, we may be looking at the franchise's renaissance, and I can't think of anything more wonderful for us fans.
