Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix STV-

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

I was actually talking about "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" when I said I liked the last act and found the beginning a bit of a slog. I never got past the first few minutes of "Star Trek V" :(.

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

I think it would definitely be a little bit better, sure.

I've actually always kind of had a place in my heart for TFF. I don't think there was anything particularly wrong with the performances or even the basic premise. I just think it was a little too ambitious for its own good.

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

Does anyone else agree with this?
No, I liked the whole thing except the constant not-working Enterprise jokes & Scotty's unconsciousness.

And those two things are a long list of what Paramount did when they got another writer or two to put the jokes and things in. They were not in Shatner's script and what he wanted to do.

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

As for Sybok, it's more conspicuous since he's a direct relative of well-loved original series main character and never so much as mentioned before or after STV.
Remember TOS ep with the flying pizza creatures? All of a sudden Kirk had a brother, Sam. STV was very OS in that way.

"All of a sudden Kirk has a brother."

Never saw 'What Are Little Girls........' ??

As if it needed to be mentioned to be legit. Same kind of idiocy that makes it possible for people to say "There was no Koenig in season 1---so Chekov can't have met Khan. Narrow little minds.

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

Fix Kirk and Spocks descent down the mountain. Fix all exterior shots of the Enterprise. Fix the ending, especially with the lame "yooooooouuuuuuuu!".

I distinctly remember sitting in the theater when I was 14, watching Kirk fall off the mountain, and thinking to myself that the special effects stunk, hopefully it won't be like that for the rest of the movie. Boy was I wrong.

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

Yes I would. But then I enjoy TFF anyway! Be great to see the finale as originally intended though...

Totally agree...And I keep hearing it would cost like $800 grand. That doesn't even sound like too much money to me, in terms of how much they might make in profit..

Yeah, ST1-4 set us up. If their FX hadn't been so AWESOME, it wouldn't have been such a big deal in V.;)

I was just watching it again last night, editing & fixing FX shots in my mind, and it would be SUCH not a bad film... if only. The other thing I lik is that like the first Trek movie, it's a stand-alone. Even TUC has ties to 2 & 3 (David- GRRRRRR).

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

^^Yes, some people forgive TFF for its' poor FX due to the fact that TOS has plenty of weak or poor FX......

So what, that was a cash strapped, time strapped TV show from 20 years earlier. TFF was a major summer movie froma franchise that had up till then had mostly good and sometimes great Fx. How could you not be bugged by the terrible FX?

I too, saw the terrible blue-screen Fx of Kirk's fall and thought, "What the hell, I've seen better rear-projection in movies made 40 years ago! Oh well, when we get back to the space shots---the FX will pick-up!"

Or maybe not.

And what producer provided that figure?

Actually I think Shatner said last year he had approached paramount and it would have cost, I think he said, 900 Grand now. But Paramount passed on it...shatner may have been naive with that estimate, or was only going to change certain parts, not all of it.

I see some of the stuff our own BBS members do, for free, and so I have to think 900 grand might do it!!! Some of the people over on FAN PRODUCTIONS are pretty good...

Change god to rock monsters and the next thing you know, there will be God Shot First T-Shirts ...

... or something.

Then again, I own the Star Wars Special Editions, so I'd probably buy a TFF "Special Edition," too ... so long as it wasn't simply upgraded effects.

Put it another way, I'd rather have the original TOS series, rather than the rather awkward "upgraded effects" version. Upgraded effects alone aren't enough.

I've actually always kind of had a place in my heart for TFF.
After introducing it to my Son recently, I have come to really love the film. Funny how after repeated viewings the flaws (of which there are many, technical & otherwise) take a back seat to the real message, conflict & humour* in the movie.:techman:

(*character-wise, not dopey Three Stooges head-banging-wise)

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

Maybe they could add it to a directors cut blu-ray box set with the other
two directors cuts we didn't get when we shelled out for the movies again
;)

Re: Hypothetical: If Paramount ponied up the cash for Shatner to fix S

Other THREE director's cuts

1, 2 AND 6

6 WAS a director's cut, but was not labled as such. It was always Meyer's preferred cut.

They chose not to call the 2 disc DVD set a director's cut because they felt since the longer version had been out for years it would be a little mis-leading to proclaim it a director's cut. They feared fans would assume it a largely different cut from what they had been seeing all along.

AND YES let Shatner re-cut and fix ther Fx of TFF and call it a director's cut and I'll be buying it day one !!

But honey, I'm only a man, HE'S Popo Bawa!!!"

And yet they reached or will reach 1 Billion dollars profit this year like they did last year? Hummm...

If they can't shell out 900 grand to redo a movie that would sell and they would make more than 900 grand profit then they need to go back to economics 101.

I don't know if it was because Shatner was cash strapped or not but he got is oldest daughter in the movie, don't know if she got paid or not ..she is the woman or girl who gave him his control PADD at the beginning that tore up when he tried to talk, and also the one who gave him his Jacket..that was his daughter Elizabeth.
