I can see what you're saying, but I can also see the other side of it. It seems clear from Spock's dialogue in TFF that he is very hesitant to discuss Sybok at all. He has to under the circumstances, but it seems reasonable that if he felt that way, he would never have mentioned him, even to Kirk and McCoy. Yes, they're best friends and, yes, Spock has been closer to Kirk than to anyone. But he's still a Vulcan and, even with Kirk, has tried to maintain certain barriers, at least superficially.

I'm still trying to think of something in TOS that I would interpret as meaning that Spock is an only child. I suppose that when Spock and Amanda are discussing his childhood, the fact that she doesn't mention any other siblings could imply that there are none. But not necessarily.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not too fond of Sybok being Spock's brother either. I think the story could have worked just as well if he were just a random Vulcan outcast who Spock had some vague knowledge of. You would have to rewrite a couple of scenes, such as how he ultimately gets control of the ship after the shuttle returns, but nothing too difficult. But, even so, I still don't see anything from TOS that precludes the possibility of a sibling for Spock.

The only thing that Sybok contridicts are the thoughts in Gene Roddenberrys head. The furore only really started through him really. If he'd come out and said "Yeah, I had an idea he had a brother" it would have never been a problem. Do people not watch TV and the Movies? Brothers and Sisters from the past roll out all the time. Soaps do it at an alarming rate.

Spock could have had a sister in trek XI. Wouldn't have violated canon. Sarek could have easily had another child with Perrin in the 2300's. I don't recall seeing the Sarek vasectomy scene onscreen...

    ^^^

So true. By 1989 Roddenberry had forgotten most of what made classic trek great.

JUst lokk at the bridge of the Ent-D.

A big beige 'family room.' Oops and con with big reclining chairs and the security officer standing!! He had no clue what made the show work and his vison for TNG was crap.
Wesley being dragged onto the bridge and bridge crew in a matter of weeks instead of months it should have took --if at all. When TNG was floundering he wasted time telling the world Spock didn't have a brother?!?

He had his chance with the movies and produced a dull bloated (but pretty) movie. As good as TMP is some folks minds if they had produced another movie like it---the franchise would be dead-dead-dead to paraphrase Treylayne.

The cryptic remarks about Spock's family kept evolving anyway...

"one of ancestors married an earth woman'

speaking of his father in the past tense, and then whoops when they want to do a story about his parents---he's alive.

If Nimoy didn't accept Spock could have a half-brother--he could have scuttled it. refused to play it. He had enough clout. He accepted, he played it. Luckinbill was a pretty darn good actor and he played the part well. He was an interesting non-standard vulcan and Spock's grief at the end was touching. He made me believe he had admired his half-brother and 'felt' his loss.

    TNG: "Sarek's Snip"

Now there's one for the bad episode idea thread.

You guys forget that he wasn't "heretofore unknown" to Spock. Heck, unless it was pertinent/relevant, Spock probably wouldn't even mention who his parents were to Kirk, if he were standing next to them!

Do either of you mention your crazed siblings to your co-workers or boss either? (I still haven't!)

After a second viewing, I thought the movie (and even Nemesis) weren't as bad as I originally thought. But then again, I actually liked Scotty being reminded that he was no longer on THE Enterprise (she was killed by kids' sparklers in III. *grin*

To the original post... I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The poor effects stand out the worst for me.

Oh, as far as the editing, you're WAY too late on that one. See fan edit "Star Trek Phase II - In Thy Image." Been awhile, I don't think the effects were upgraded though, as I believe it was a one-man effort.

I'd like to see Paramount move on this now. Shatner currently is 78 years old. Although he seems pretty healthy, NO ONE lives forever. I'd like Bill to get a shot at getting this thing closer to where he envisioned it, before he leaves us. Robert Wise, arguably a more highly esteemed director, passed away less than a year after the special edition of TMP was released. I am glad he got to finish that project. I am glad he left us a commentary on it. It's was good for us. It was good for him. It was good for the team that worked on it. I was ultimately good for Paramount. It was a win for everyone involved.

Some people, and I'm not naming names  would say that the movie doesn't need fixing.

And others might say that we don't have to George Lucas-ise everything of cultural entertainment value to keep it relevant.

Cheesy FX shots are wholesome. Just be thankful it doesn't look like this.

In the case pf both TMP and FF, I think the case can be made that they were less than finished when they were released. TMP included FX shots the were clearly not finished. The entire ending of FF was slapped together as the rockmen sequence faile to work, and there's the whole issue of bargin basement FX from Asoociates and Ferren. All the other movies were pretty much complete and there is little or no unfinished business associated with them.

Wise died in September, 2005 and the DE was released at the end of 2001. That's a really long "less than a year".
