Hyper Impulse

Admiral
So I was watching Future's End today on DVD and I happened to pay closer attention to the Aeon scenes this time. In the episode the Aeon's computers mention that the ship is fitted with a HyperImpulse Drive. My question is what exactly is a Hyper Impulse Drive and has anything ever been revealed about it?

I have no idea what you're referring to. It sounds like just a throwaway tech phrase. But it could mean a propulsion system designed to achieve high relativistic velocities close to light.

It sounds like those stupid buzz words added to washing powders and washing up liquids.

I miss Diane Carey's "I.M. Pulse" engines from her old pre-TOS novels. Had Enterprise used that name the show would have been at least 0.2% better.

True.

RIKER
Increase to Warp Six.

LAFORGE
Aye, sir. Full impulse.

(Teaser to TNG's "Conspiracy".) :rommie:

Hee hee... Maybe "hyper impulse" is like "Ludicrous Speed"? :D I'd agree it's probably just a technobabble term.

Though I'm not too sure how accurate my Notes are, I have the Impulse Speed of the...
Galaxy Class @ .75c and the
Nebula Class @ .95c

Isn't 1.0c = Warp 1 ?

It's the "my ship is from the future so my Impulse Drive is better than your Impulse Drive" drive.

Full Impulse is generally held to be (artificially) limited to .25c to prevent relatavistic effects becoming noticable.

Yes and no. Yes, Warp Factor 1 is equivalent to 1c, but the nature of warp drive means they're not actually travelling at the speed of light (since the idea is to circumvent, rather than break, the universe's "speed limit").

I always had an issue with Warp 1 being speed of light because FTL means FASTER than light, NOT equivalent to light.

I always thought the Bird Of Prey had some combined warp-impulse hybrid--with the coils doubling as hinges for the wings.

Does the term "impulse" absolutely have to mean Newtonian-thrust-based sublight propulsion? If so, the notion of saucer separation seems diminished in emergency utility. (Unless we're assuming that Federation starship primary hulls typically contain a small, low-powered backup warp engine.)

Ah, so that explains the families on the Enterprise-D. It's 24th-century-Earth's way of getting rid of "the problem child"?

I seem to remember a reference to "gravimetric" hyperimpulse somewhere, suggesting a pure field drive (ie. no newtonian component).

With this, the post-24th century feds would have something akin to the flight method of that plasma-sucking, sickly sweet smelling gas creature that roughed-up Kirk and co. during his time on the Farragut.

Why does warp 1 have to be superluminal? GR wanted it to be transluminal, which would make it in your parlance FAL (fast as) instead of FTL.

all right. i have a stupid question. wtf is this about 0.99' speed of light slowing down time?

Time dilation is something predicted by relativity. As you get closer to the speed of light, time for you is effectively slowed down, from the perspective of the rest of the universe. From your perspective, time appears to pass quicker for the rest of the universe. Effectively, it's a method of traveling to the future. At 99% of light, for every second on your ship, 7 seconds pass on Earth. Think original Heston Planet of the Apes (I & II, not III)

Relativity does other weird things too. You get more massive the faster you go, you also become shorter in the direction of travel.
