Humans are from Earth

But everyone else is named after the planet they come from. :rommie: Or are there exceptions?

Hmm...the Klingons. There homeworlds named Qo'noS.
Also in some episods they speak from Terrans...don´t they? And Terra is latin for Earth. So humans are named after the planet sometimes.

Well, I don't know where the Orions come from, but it can't be the planet Orion because Orion is a constellation.

The Horta are native to the planet Janus VI. And were we ever told what the Gorns’ home planet is called? Gornia? Gornisht?

Humans are also occasionally referred to as “Earthers,” though it's usually a disparaging term.

It's mainly the Mirror universe. The Terran Empire spread out among the stars but was their own Empire, rather than part of a galactic Federation.

Humans do seem to colonise many worlds - they are more than one planet's population. Would the humans born on Mars be Martians?

The term "human" seems to be used irregularly in Trek, IMO. Sometimes it's used in a very general sense, sometimes it's not. And then you have races that are described as "humanoid."

Perhaps "human" is a generic term used to describe several identical or similar races from different worlds, but "Terran" is used to describe humans specifically from Earth or of Earth descent...

If someone who's ancestors came from another country is born in the United States, they are considered an American.

If they were born and grew up on another planet, I really wonder whether they'd be considered Terrans.

This isn't seen so much in Star Trek, but in other sci fi there's often tension between Earth and colonized planets, even in the first generation of settlement.

Can anyone say African Americans?

I can say it, but it's a lot of syllables.

And it doesn't necessarily denote a race.
