How's 2011 living up to your expectation?

I'm glad we don't have flying cars. Imagine someone losing control and crashing into your bedroom! Also the gas mileage would probably suck.

It could be worse...

Yeah. Easily.

But since I had no expectations for 2011, things aren't so bad.

Although I'm pissed that we STILL don't have flying cars or regular trips to the moon colony that I was told we would have when I was growing up in the 1970's.

Oh well, at least I have a home and enough food, and access to pretty much any DVD I want, AND most importantly, the best woman alive as my constant companion, so I can't complain TOO much.

It's exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways.

Smartphones - couldn't have imagined them
Blu-ray - and I thought a video player with tracking was great
Laptops - more power than I could imagine
The worldwide web - just WOW!
Navigation devices - life-saving
Strides in medicine - have saved many of my loved ones
...

I am glad I live in the time that I do, I wouldn't trade any of our present day mod cons for a romantic past. :D

I imagined them (well, actually, my imagination fed off a composite of similar devices across a variety of TV shows/movies) so I was even more delighted when technology caught up with my imagination! :D

There really is something to looking for the positive. I can be very jaded and cynical, with a hefty dose of realpolitik, but what stops it dragging me down is that I do fundamentally trust in the imagination and ingenuity of mankind. Many individuals may be stupid but as a whole, we as a race solve problems and the world gets better. So on balance, I consider myself an optimistic person and that, I feel, makes the world a happier place.

The OP focuses on the negatives, but it's just as easy - not to mention more enjoyable - to focus on the positives of where we are and where we're going.

If people really want a flying car, no one is stopping them from buying one. It's just that it's called a helicopter and most people can neither afford nor want a helicopter.

I don't mean right now, year-to-date. I mean the 21st century as a whole. When you were growing up in the 70's or the 80's, what kind of expectations did you have of the year 2011?

I was born in 78 and basically grew up expecting that we really would have robotic servants, significant presence in space, some kind of semi-permanent moon base, cheap renewable energy, electric cars everywhere, and that much closer to technology utopia. I'm intentionally leaving up the childhood fantasies such as hover vehicles and personal jet-packs.

Still, I am extremely disappointed.

The only robotic servant we have are tiny vacuum/floor cleaners. We are barely in space and we don't have anything on the moon. Nations still fight over oil and fossil fuel is still causing the same environmental impact now as it did 30 years ago. Renewable energy and electric cars are just getting started but still cost prohibitive and less cost effective than the traditional combustion engine.

I'm disillusioned and I hesitate to set any expectations for the year 2041. I'm now quite pessimistic about our future as a species.

You?

*NOTES* Forget the robots. While the information age that we live in is surely wonderful. I feel like as long as we don't figure out a way off of this planet, the human species is heading towards a dead end, quick. This is why I brought up the space colony issue.

I am disapointed in what the future was suposed to be. In BTTF2 we were suposed to have hover cars and hover boards. What we were sold and what we got does not align. We are probably 30-40 off from those things like no longer using fossil fuels or a relatively peacefull world and robotic servants.

As far as humanity and where it's headed, the jury is still out. We are a resiliant race than can handle a lot, but global environmental change increases due to carbon bieng pumped into the atmosphere. I don't call it global warming because it's more than just warming, there's more to it than that. Chemicals also are continuing to be pumped into the atmoshere as well as the water supply. Land is bieng over used and non-renewable resources are drying up. Wars and rumors of wars are all over the planet. There are financial crisis' all over the planet. Most of the world's governments are currupt. There's world wide epidemics of aids, cancer, hunger, poverty ect.. Worst of all, there's not enough bieng done by the leaders of the world to combat these problems because of thier own interests and petty differences and the "little people" are bieng divided and held down by those in power.

Can we over come these things? Yes we can, but it won't be easy and time is running out. If we continue down this same path without any change, it is inevitable that this planet will become uninhabitable, this is not bieng pestimistic, it is just a simple fact. The planet will survive a long time and reset it's self, we don't have that luxury. I do have faith that people will wake up and stop believing the lies and bullshit that the oil companies, media, government, and other interest groups are feeding us. We will become fed up with it eventually and things will change. I just hope it can change in time. A lot of damage has been done, but we can still survive. We may walk away with a few scars, but at least we get to walk away.

As far as 2011 in my personal life, the jury is still out on that too. So far, i'm pretty much in the same spot as I was in January and as I was in March 2010. I hope that in a few months it will be better and I hope in a year from now things are good, but now things are stagnant.

Well. The world hasn't exploded like I thought it would, so currently I have nothing planned.

As far as I can tell Obama has failed to make any achievements of note since the beginning of the year (and unless I can find something down in my memory, since he won the Presidency).

My girlfriend of several months broke up with me. Ouch, that really hurts, few weeks later I bounced back.

Took up the guitar, fingers on left hand sting and burn.

Nearly cauterized my fingers together in a hot glue gun accident.

So far that's all I can really think of that happened this year.

You say that like its a bad thing ;)

Every year that passes in this decade brings me closer to realizing my full income. My kids are already into or entering their 20s so legal conditions for child support are evaporating. Don't get me wrong, I will always help my kids even into adulthood - I just despise support monies going first to my hopelessly reckless ex-wife. The thousands she cost me in lawyer's fees are nearly paid off (a crushing extra monthly bill in an economy that's tough enough ) But it actually feels like there is a flicker of daylight, finally, at the end of the tunnel.

Its awsome.

Movie effects are as really good.

Video games are cooler than expected.

No robot servants, but the Internet is better.

No flying cars, but I thought those were too dangerous anyway.

Mobile phones are like pocket sized computers.

Coastal states are not underwater.

There is still fish in the ocean.

The world is not starving from overpopulation.

No global nuclear war.

I seem to recall most movies set in the 2010-2012 time-frame involved world-wide disaster if not outright apocalypse, so I'm going to call this version of reality a win.

Pretty boring actually. No nuclear holocausts, no zombie apocalypse, no alien invasions... although I think David Cameron is working on the V for Vendetta-esq totalitarian society.
