How would you reboot TNG?

Since CBS has now announced a forthcoming new series for 2017 a lot of the ideas in the Future of Trek forum become even more of a fantasy than they were before.

I had an idea that rebooted TNG, but it was somewhat indirect because the idea was to reboot all of Trek (primarily TOS and TNG) that fused the eras together in a smooth transition where the common thread was the same Enterprise. Essentially the story started with Kirk taking over from Pike then later transitioning to Uhura in command and finally Picard taking over for the final run of the series.

But I am curious that if given the chance how might some of those frequenting this forum reboot TNG.

Anyone?

Still this:

Deep Space Voyager the Next Generation

An epic multi-POV, arc based series in the mode of Game of Thrones.

  • Deep Space Nine- Formerly an orbital Cardassian ore processing station, the Bajoran Provisional Government has turned it over to Starfleet to serve as the base of operations for the defense and exploration of the Bajor Sector and beyond. In addition to Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia, there is a large civilian population on the station that includes Bajorans, Starfleet dependants and other foreign nationals.
    • Commodore Benjamin Sisko- Starfleet Commander for the Bajoran Sector. Sisko is veteran of the Cardassian Wars. His wife, Jennifer and son, Jake live with him on DS9, but he has misgivings about them being so close to the Cardassian border.
    • Lt. Commander Tuvok- Starfleet Intelligence. Tuvok oversees various on ongoing SI operations in the sector. Some of which might be above Sisko's "pay grade".
    • Commander Katherine Pulaski- Chief Medical Officer. A veteran officer with strong opinions, she's often a thorn in the side of Sisko and his unofficial conscience. She's also fond of needling Tuvok and has a low opinion of "spies".
    • Lt. .Commander Data- Chief Operations Officer. An android. Data is in charge of keeping the station running. Given its blend of Federation. Cardassian and Bajoran technology it is a task that keeps Data busy around the clock. Not needing sleep he is well suited for the task. As an android wishing to become more "human" Tuvok finds him fascinating.
    • Colonel Kira Nerys- Bajoran Liaison Officer. Kira was a member of the Bajoran Resistance during the Cardassian Occupation. She is still wanted in the Cardassian Union for terrorism. She coordinates activities that involve Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia.
    • Constable Odo- Chief of Law Enforcement for the station. A shapeshifter of unknown origin, Odo was raised on the station by Bajorans. He is strongly attached to the station and sees it as his only home. While nominally in charge of civilian law enforcement, Sisko likes to use Odo for Starfleet related operations as well.
    • Quark- A Ferengi merchant who runs a casino on DS9's promenade. He is also heavily involved in various criminal activities in the sector. As such, he and Odo have an adversarial relationship.
    • Garak- A Cardassian tailor who runs a shop on the promenade. He is the only Cardassian still on the station. His reasons for staying are currently a mystery. Though Tuvok certainly has a few ideas.
    • Dukat - A Gul in the Cardassian military. Dukat is the former Prefect of Bajor and presided over the transition from the Cardassian Union to the Bajoran Provisional Government. Currently he is the military commander for the Cardassian territory adjacent to the Bajor Sector. He would very much like to be Prefect of Bajor again.

  • The USS Enterprise- A Galaxy class vessel, the Enterprise is the newest and most advanced ship in Starfleet. It's primary mission is establishing diplomatic relations with the new worlds beyond Bajor. It's staff includes a large diplomatic team.
    • Captain Jean-Luc Picard- The ship's Commanding Officer. Picard is a man weary of war. The prospect of commanding a mission of exploration and diplomacy has kept him Starfleet. He sees a new war on the horizon and is making every effort to change course.
    • Lt. Commander Chakotay- The ship's Executive Officer. Chakotay's homeworld was on the frontlines of the Cardassian Wars and now lies in Cardassian territory. He's not happy being on a ship who's main objective is to "make nice" with the Cardassians.
    • Ambassador Deanna Troi- The sector's Chief Diplomatic Officer, she divides her time between DS9 and the Enterprise. As a civilian, she's not always greeted with open arms by Starfleet. Her goals are often at odds with Commodore Sisko's, the sector's military commander. Picard is more open minded and she prefers the Enterprise to DS9
    • Lt. B'Elanna Torres- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. She served with Chakotay in the Cardassian Wars and shares his views on making peace with them.
    • Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher - The ship's Chief Medical Officer. The widow of Jack Crusher, Picard's former XO and closest friend. Her son is in Starfleet and she worries about his future.
    • Ensign Ro Laren- The ship's Flight Control Officer. Born in a Bajoran refugee camp she's never been to Bajor before this assignment. She's at odds with native born Bajorans, who see the refugees as cowards who chose to flee rather than fight

  • The USS Defiant- A Defiant class light cruiser. Its primary mission is defense of the station and the Bajor system. It serves as the flagship for the commander of DS9.The Defiant is a warship, part of the legacy of the Cardassian Wars. It's crew is small and most are experienced combat officers.
    • Commander William T. Riker- The Defiant's Commanding Officer. Riker comes across as a genial sort, quick with a joke and a twinkle in his eye. He's also known to have an eye for the ladies. In a combat situation he's all business, though. A clever commander with a trick or two up his sleeve.
    • Lt. Commander Elizabeth Shelby- The ship's Executive Officer. She's all business, all the time and isn't afraid to speak her mind if she thinks Riker ( or anyone else) is wrong. She has high standards and if she had her way the crew would be drilling around the clock.
    • Lt. Worf- The ship's tactical officer. On a ship the size of the Defiant, tactical includes flight control. He respects Riker and admires Shelby.
    • EMH- Experimental Medical Hologram. A new technology currently being tested on the Defiant. It's inventor, Dr. Louis Zimmerman is on board overseeing the test. (or is he?)
    • Lt. Ezri Tigan- Medical Officer. Tigan is Combat Field Medic and provides backup for the EMH. An unjoined Trill, who's not on the candidate list, she lives life to the fullest.
    • Lt. Geordi La Forge- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. Blinded in the Cardassian War, La Forge can interface with the ship's systems through his VISOR, a device that enables him to see. As such he feels and senses what the ship does. At times this seems to cut him off from his crewmates and he wonders if he is losing his humanity.
    • Ensign Harry Kim- Operations Officer. A rookie right out of the academy he's in awe of these "heroes".

  • The USS Voyager- An Intrepid class scout ship. It's primary mission is science and exploration. Most of its crew are in the Science division and the rest is comprised of young officers, some just out of the Academy. Because of this, the ship has been nicknamed "The School Bus". Voyager spends most of its time away from the Bajor Sector in unexplored territory.
    • Commander Kathryn Janeway- The ship's Commanding Officer. Formerly in the Science Division, this is Janeway's first command. For her the thrill of the "hunt" is what drives her. She needs to know what's behind the next nebula and beyond the farthest star.
    • Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax- The ship's Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer. A joined Trill, Dax can call upon decades of experience from her previous hosts. Which is at odds with her youthful appearance. A close friend of Sisko in her previous host, he still calls her "The Old Man". A name that followed her to Voyager.
    • Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien- The ship's Chief Engineer. The real old man aboard the ship, he has a decade on most of the crew. A veteran of the Cardassian Wars, He's one of Janeway's trusted advisors and a father figure to the younger crewmen. (Just don't tell him that). His wife, Keiko, lives on DS9.
    • Lt. Julian Bashir- The ship's Chief Medical Officer. Young, inexperienced and on his first deep space mission, Bashir is out of his element and tries to cover it up with bravado. O'Brien has taken him under his wing.
    • Ensign Wesley Crusher- Operations Officer. A gifted young man, Crusher completed Starfleet Academy in record time. He's the youngest member of the crew and very aware of this As such he is over eager to prove himself. His mother is the CMO on the Enterprise.
    • Lt. Tasha Yar- The Ship's Chief Security Officer. Growing up as an orphan on failed colony where every day was a fight for survival, Yar feels out of place on a ship full of scientists and overachievers.
    • Lt. Tom Paris- Flight Control Officer. Paris is onboard the Voyager as a favor to Admiral Owen Paris, Janeway's former CO. Paris has been a disciplinary problem (and embarrassment to his father) in the past. Voyager is his "last chance".

Ditch Riker, bring Yar more front and center, reduce Troi's visibility, return Data to his alien roots.

Here's how I answered the question the last time it was asked around these parts:

I've often thought about what I would do to "reboot" TNG. Believe I've outlined my thoughts before in this forum. That being said here are a few of my ideas.

I'd mine the original TNG bible, using many of the ideas that were either altered or dropped when the series actually went into production, such as the Enterprise being on a 15 to 20 year mission, alone and without much contact with Starfleet Command. I would explore the community that would be built around the idea that the ship was alone, with only each other to truly rely on.

Starship Life

In other words, I'd find stories among the crew, both Starfleet and civilan, what life truly would be like on a great starship sailing the stars. Much like the movie MASTER AND COMMANDER really portrayed what life was like on an 18th century Royal Navy frigate.

While I wasn't overly fond of the families concept, I'd keep it since it's a great source of conflict and something that would add occasionally tension on the ship. TNG never really dealt with the concept well.

Who are the people that would bring their families? How does that come into conflict with other characters? Does that create strife between the "military" officers and the civilian population, both of whom will occasionally have competing agendas and, of course, different worldviews?

The Crew

One thing that always bugs me about TNG is the lack of conflict, or Roddenberry's "perfect human" idic. The "band of brothers", which can be squarely rested at David Gerrold's feet since he wrote the original bible, was something I never quite understood. Sure they can get along, even like each other but that doesn't mean they aren't going to disagree.

Human beings whether today or 400 years from now will still have their own personalities, their own experiences that shape their worldviews. Conflict isn't who slept with whom — that melodramtic, soap operish idea of conflict. No, it's when one worldview rubs against an opposing one. Or how those worldviews approach problems. Think about McCoy and Spock, who had an underlying conflict because of the different worldviews. Even Kirk and Spock didn't always see eye-to-eye. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" had a wonderful tension between the two, which I wished had been seen more in the actual series.

That's what I mean by conflict. How each character views a problem and how they'd solve it, how that differs from another characters? How one character's goals may stand in the way of another?

TNG missed the boat by eliminating any tension between Picard and Riker. EaF set up a potential strife with the idea that Riker didn't allow his former captain to beam down. You were waiting for something like that to happen with Picard and him, but it never did only the lip service of "you can't beam down, regulations, blah blah."

Not to say they'd be entirely the same characters from TNG. There'd be some changes.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard:

Much younger than in the original. Perhaps late 30s. This would allow him to drive much of the show's action. Still thoughtful, perhaps not as reserved. He is still very much of a different era of Starfleet where captains lead away missions, didn't hesitate to put themselves into harm's way. An era that is slowly going away.

He is primarily driven by the need to protect his ship and crew at all cost, even at the sacrifice of his own life. This worldview has been shaped by the loss of his previous command, the Stargazer, which nearly resulted in his being booted out of the fleet. He is an explorer at heart, who has learned to be a warrior. And those two personality traits often cause him internal conflict.

Commander Wilhelmina T. Ryker, aka "Number One":

Yes, a woman. TNG lacked a lot of strong women in command roles. Always wanted to see Shelby as first officer after BoBW. Either replacing Riker or becoming his XO.

She is ambitious. She is driven by her desire to get her own command. She believes that she should be the captain of the Enterprise. She is very much an officer of the new era of Starfleet, which is less military and less formal. Her worldview and her own ambition often puts her into direct conflict with Picard.

They don't always see eye-to-eye on command decisions. She occasionally challenges him in front of others.

Like Riker in the original bible, she'd find it a little hard to accept ...

Data:

Never liked that a human built Data. Really liked the concept that his origins were a bit more mysterious in the original bible. I'd bring back that concept. I'd return him to being more an artificial biological being as he was in the early episodes, rather than the mechanical automaton he later became.

Still a childlike quality, Data would make some humans uncomfortable. Yet he'd be a reasoned, logical creature, which could at times make him dangerous and a bit unpredictable. He could use reason to sacrifice a life because it was logical to do so to save a greater good. Without empathy, he'd be someone that could do harm but not realize that he is doing so.

Deanna Troi:

She'd be a civilian First Contact specialist. An advisor to Picard on contact with alien lifeforms. Bring back some of the more reserved aspect of the character from the first season. Yet that aspect would only be for when she's on duty. Off-duty she is very much aware of her own sexuality, especially since there are little taboos regarding sex on Betazed. She is a sensual creature, sultry but very much in control of it.

However, there are those humans that are intimidated by Troi because of her telepathic skills. Since she is from a planet without inhibitions, some fear that she'd invade their privacy.

Dr. Beverly Crusher:

Less Janice Rand with a medical degree. While she'd still have a past with Picard, she'd be a research scientist in her own right, aboard Enterprise because of that.

Slightly older than Picard, her husband, Jack, was his mentor. Picard replaced him as captain of the Stargazer when he was killed on an away mission. Part of Beverly blames him for Jack death since it was his duty to protect his captain. The other is guilt for having an affair with Picard while her husband was alive.

However, she is driven by a need to save life, no matter what, to uphold her oath as a physician. More than that, she is also strongly driven to complete a comprehensive work on xenomedicine. This agenda creates conflict between her, Picard and Ryker.

Midshipman Wesley Crusher:

Roddenberry gave lip service that Picard, Riker and Wesley represented the three stages of an officer's career. Less genius, Crusher is truly Mr. Midshipman Hornblower. Eager, unexperienced and a bit of a self-doubter, who is constantly thrown into situations where he has to prove himself. Picard can be overly hard on him, as he trains the young Crusher to become an officer.

And the Rest ...

Haven't really given much thought to the other characters. I much liked Geordi on the bridge rather than when he was the chief engineer. I'd maybe explore him a bit and how having a device as an extension of himself informs his worldview.

Not sure if there would be a Tasha. Although, I'd probably make her Hernandez to make the cast more ethnically diverse. Worf would be there, not sure how.

Stories

Less episodes per season, to stretch the budget and tighten up the storytelling. The series would still be episodic, but with the occasionally planet exploration taking place over the course of several episodes.

It would be episodic like MAD MEN, where each episode stands on its own but pushes the conflict between characters a bit further or to a head in the last episode of the season. You can watch an individual episode and still get the story, but watch the entire season and you see a greater tapestry.

The characters would change and evolve over the episodes, much like MAD MEN. I'd bring the sophistication of today's television storytelling to the action-adventure of STAR TREK.

I'd also buy LitSF short stories, from today and yesteryear, and adapt them. Bring on contemporary writers like John Scalzi, Cory Doctorow and Neil Gaiman as contributors. Maybe even as consultants.

Add Yar back somehow (I mean they did bring her back through an alternate timeline anyways) or have some presence of her besides her daughter. I guess newer graphics/philosophy from today's POV.

I'm a ratings hungry soulless TV exec, and here's my pitch for ST:TNG Reboot:

The U.S.S Enterprise-D will go on another adventure each week. It will be an arc-heavy show with two-parters and three-parters that all lead up to something at the end of the season, and feeds into the overall narrative. Here's my ideas for characters:

Captain Picards: A young, 20-something blonde boy who'll make any woman's heart throb. What? Gay people? Yeah, something will probably throb for them, too. He has all of the gravitas of Patrick Stewart in a sexy package we can sell to the 18-49 crowd.

Riker: People like dogs. Everybody likes dogs. So instead of having a second in command, we'll just have Riker be the Captain's dog. I'm thinkin' husky. Okay, okay. If we have to have a person let's make him a real playboy, and have him be a bit of a loose canon. Picard's like his mentor.

Deanna Troi: If we can sell this baby to HBO we can just have her be naked all the time. That's how Betazoid culture is, right? And the Federation is always accepting of other cultures. If we sell it to a cable network we can just put her in a bikini and pin her communicator to one of her straps. At last resort we'll design the catsuit of the century. She's basically the same character otherwise, though..

Worf: Picard's right-handed man. We'll get him doing kick-ass action scenes every episode. TNG's Worf was often frumpy and grumpy -- this Worf is going to be the freaking Chuck Norris to all those trekkies out there.

Data: We could probably sell Data's character basically as-is, but let's have him be an early twenty-something blonde male. A cute pretty boy.

Geordi: Let's make Geordi be funny. Why can't Geordi be funny? Data is the straight man and Geordi is the joker. He can still have the hairband thing over his eyes but for God's sakes lets's see more blinking lights this time.

Dr. Crusher: Hey, remember that time Data danced with Crusher? That was pretty cool. Let's say she has a fascination with 21st century pop music and have her dance to current pop hits at different times. (ALone in her quarters, in a performance, at phaser point, etc.) We can sell TNG soundtracks online twice a year. Also, can we make Crusher be an Asian chick or hispanic? That would round out the cast a lot.

Oh, and Nu-Spock comes around every year at sweeps week. I don't care how, he comes by. I'll let the writers and the egg heads figure that one out.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard

A senior fleet Captain approximately eighty years of age, entered the academy at age seventeen.

First Officer

Picard is known as "the school master," promising young officers are assigned to him for seasoning prior to being given their first command. At the beginning of every season we'll meet a new first officer. Riker will be the first season's number one, at the end of the season he will receive his orders (not "be offered") to his first command, this will be the standard for the end of each season.

Lt. Marcha Hernandez

Latina female, late twenties. Head of the ship's security detachment, a lesbian who is as overt and obvious about her sexuality as Riker is about his. More muscle than Crosby. Her security station on the bridge does not involve the ship's weapons.

Deanna Troi

Civilian, representative of the council and basically a "political officer." She handles diplomatic affairs and also function as a intelligence analyst. Despite being a political officer, her and Picard's relationship isn't adversarial. While still empathic, she has to be within spitting distance for it to work.

Lt Commander Lilah Muharram (arabic for crusher)

Lebanese female, early forties. Ship's doctor, has mid'teenage daughter.

You could always have Silva LaForge (Geordi LaForge's mother) reappear in the Hera. Having returned from a mysterious experience or destination, The Hera could be something of a ghost ship. You'd also have the requisite guest star tie-in by having Levar Burton come and greet his long lost mom. With that plot device they could make up any twilight zone bs they wanted.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard is the elder statesman, an officer known for his diplomacy and negotiating skills, whose time in Starfleet has rewritten several chapters of the rule book, whilst his name carries great gravitas throughout the quadrant. He was handpicked to command the Enterprise-D, as a symbol of what the ship would stand for and its emphasis on peaceful exploration and first contact.

Commander William Riker was found as a baby in a crashed shuttle on an uninhabited planet. Raised on Earth and with no knowledge of where he comes from or who his people are, he has embraced human culture fully, pushing himself to excel and be the best Starfleet has to offer.

Lt. Commander Data was built by an alien race to preserve a doomed human colony. She may be the most sophisticated piece of technology onboard (including the ship itself), but she longs to understand just what it is to be human.

Lt. Commander Deanna Troi is the Ship's Counsellor and diplomatic aid to Picard. Born to a human father and Betazoid mother, she was gifted with empathic and telepathic abilities, which help her to understand, diagnose and treat the mental and emotional issues of the crew.

Lieutenant Geordi La Forge may be young and born blind, but he is one of the best engineers in the fleet. Headhunter by Picard, impressed by how he resolved a design flaw no one else spotted, he jumped ahead of several other ranking officers to get the coveted posting.

Lieutenant Natasha Yar had a hard childhood, growing up on a failed colony, she learned quickly how to look after herself and others--something that became an obsession of hers. After her brother was killed by a rape gang, she managed to get off her homeworld and enter Starfleet. Focuses on the safety of others, her personal tragedy has left her cold and cut off.

Lieutenant Selar is the cool, calm and efficient Vulcan CMO. Though her skills as a physical, surgeon and researcher cannot be faulted, her bedside manner leaves something to be desired.

Lieutenant JG Worf is a surprise to many, being a proud and honourable Klingon who excels as the ship's Science Officer. Though he has to compete with the superior intellect of Data, he is more than capable of holding his own when it comes to scientific inquiry and research, often able to get one step ahead due to his instincts and gut feeling over hyper-rational logic.

TNG was very good so I'd only do minor changes.

Switch Riker's and Troi's genders, remove Worf completely, keep Yar, Geordi is chief engineer fromt he start, Ro is the pilot, Wesley is not a genius saving the Enterprise but a regular Teenager (and downgraded to a recurring character).

Make Picard an admiral in charge of fleet operations or something like that, so you only see him once every couple of seasons when the Captain needs to talk to Starfleet Command.

Kor

I wouldn't bother.

ST:TNG was more or less a 1987 reboot of the original Star Trek television series.

All the Trek TV shows that followed were part of the same production framework, managed by the same people, cast and budgeted in the same fashion. Every post-TNG managed lower ratings than TNG, declining over about a ten year period to where the last show in the line didn't make its seven-year plan.

What is going to be done now, and what ought to be done, is to reboot Star Trek a second time for television (it's already been done for the movies) producing a modern TV series based on the original source material from TOS and whatever from TNG is still appealing.

I wouldn't even try to reboot TNG.

If I were forced to do something, what I would do is set a new crew aboard the Enterprise-B of the Abramsverse, literally the next generation.

Captain William Riker. Early forties, first in his class at the academy. A protege of Admiral Hanson, Riker was handpicked to command the Enterprise-D prior to it's completion, requested a temporary demotion to serve as the first officer aboard the newly built USS Galaxy to gain familiarity with the Galaxy Class. This is his second command. He was somewhat surprised when his new first officer informed him that captains don't belong on away teams.

Commander Jean-Luc ("Johnny Quest") Picard
. First officer, mid sixties, Married three times, he is a grandfather and currently single. More experienced than his new young captain, an incident in his past has result in him being past over for his own command. Head strong and hard charging, he has a well earned reputation as a womanizer. A fan of Latin music, he is often seen dancing the samba as he travels the ship's corridors.

Lieutenant Worf. Tactical officer, a veteran of the Cardassian front and the Tzenkethi border war. Captain Riker usually accepts his tactical advice and general recommendations. A single father, he adores his son Alex.

Lieutenant Jadzia Dax. Senior science officer. Ninety year old Jaffa. Her abdominal carries a larval form Goa'uld, which provides her with enhanced strength, health, and longevity.

Ensign Data
. Science officer. A eleven year old female synthetic being who is intellectually and physically superior in every way and she's damned smug about it too. She was accidentally activated by a Starfleet exploration team and has no knowledge why she was created or by whom. Often irritated by Dax remind her that (truthfully) she still has a lot to learn.

Lt. Commander Sonya Gomez
. Chief Engineer, late thirties. Fun loving, she shares Picard's taste in music (but resists his advances), is married to senior nurse Alyssa Ogawa.

Ensign Geordi La Forge. Junior engineer with wide ranging knowledge, go to guy for away teams.

Lt. Commander Jack Crusher
. Chief medical officer and old friend of Picard's since their first assignment. A widower with one daughter, typical teenage Leslie.

Lieutenant Deanna Troi. Psychological counsellor, reports to Doctor Crusher. Born to a Bolian father and Betazed mother, her psychic perspections give her a heighten ability to "read" people and situations.

Captain Ancesco Che. Starmarines. Mid-thirties, Non-Human species. Commands two infantry platoons and the Enterprise's small fighter squadron.

First Lieutenant Natasha ("Nat") Yar
. Starmarines Infantry. Late twenties and single. Commands one of the infantry platoons. Fixture on away missions.

Gunnery Sergeant Miles O'Brien. Starmarines Infantry. Married to civilian botanist, two daughters. Speaks with a pronounced Irish accent.

Minuet. Civilian, non-Human species, unknown age. An old friend of Captain Riker's, he convinced her to come aboard and run Ten-Forward. She decorated Ten-Forward to resemble a Kansas City jazz club of the mid twentieth century. Acts as general "life coach" for the crew.

Capt. Picard: Don't use an actor with real baldness, hire some hunk and shave his head.
Riker: Really need someone who's better looking.
Data: More emo. Androids need that artificial lifeform/human being conflict.
Geordi: Up the "street" quotient by about 30%
Beverly, Deanna: Skimpier outfits will do.
Worf: tough one. Perhaps up the ethnic quotient. Or give him earrings.

Rebooting TNG is the worst idea in the long, sad History of Bad Ideas! You can't capture lightning in a bottle a second time. With The Classic Series, it's different, obviously ... only so much Ham and Cheese. It's just crying out for a reboot, what with the atrocious overacting, the cardboard sets and primitive special effects.

Despite these many and varied shortcomings, TOS still charmed audiences around the world. It's possibly because the show evoked a live theatre experience, in its staging and presentation. Certainly, Shakespeare inspired much of the dialogue and characterisations. And most of all, the series had Gene Roddenberry's bold vision of the future, underpinning it all. So, it can be argued that The Original Series was sort of preparing the way for TNG by getting the kinks out of incorporating Gene's vision into an affordable television format. Then the TOS movies took its aging cast and fine-tuned the experiment, even further. A lot of growing pains and however many years later, TNG finally arrives to bring The Very best of STAR TREK to the small screen.

Gene Roddenberry's crowning achievement in entertainment and the ultimate expression of his philosophy finds its truest expression in The Next Generation. Tis folly to attempt to "improve" it or make it "better." It would only succeed at being "different" and that's not enough to satisfy this TNG fan.

Bring the entire original cast back but have them play different roles.

Patrick Stewart as Geordi La Forge
Jonathan Frakes as Deanna Troi
LeVar Burton as Tasha Yar
Denise Crosby as Worf
Michael Dorn as Wesley Crusher
Gates McFadden as Jean-Luc Picard
Marina Sirtis as Will Riker
Brent Spiner as Beverly Crusher
Wil Wheaton as Data
