How would you rather have seen Enterprise-D go down?

Here's that image! This is the six foot studio model, modified by ILM just after Generations (when they assumed the E might be a Galaxy class or Galaxy class variant). I believe it's now in storage somewhere in Paramount or ILM's lot.

No. The model was sold at auction.

I liked that they used the saucer-separation aspect in generations, but crashing the saucer section on the planet felt way too forced.

I would have liked to have seen the battle scene in Generations start off with them using the visor info to do some sort of Sabotage or similar to cause the warp core breach. Then have the actual battle not begin until after the saucer separation, so that all the BoP is fighting is the saucer. That would have perhaps been a more believable matchup.

Against the Dominion, instead of the U.S.S. Odyssey.

It doesn't need to 'splode, however. Just crash on a planet.
Since the Dominion started things with a kamikaze run, it would be fitting if the Enterprise ended the war by sacrificing itself in a way that would mirror that.

The problem with substituting the E-D for the Odyssey is that I'm sure the Jem'hadar were under orders to destroy the ship, even to the point, as shown, of engaging in a relatively pointless kamikaze run (given Odyssey was already retreating). The goal of the conflict from the Dominion perspective was to make an unmistakable point. If the E-D had crashed the Jem'hadar probably would have nuked the saucer from orbit or such.

Oh but plot armor is quite something. Data would have thought up some technobabble to preserve the saucer so it would crash, or simply give crew time to get to escape pods.

Right...but my point is the Jem'hadar evidently had orders to blow up the capital ship and there's no indication they would have let escape pods get away, though I guess it is possible. Similarly we have no reason to believe that the saucer simply crashing would have saved anyone; the Jem'hadar might have started attacking the saucer.

But my point is that plot armor would protect the TNG heroes like it did the DS9 heroes.

Plot would have also caused the ENT-D go down in battle against the Dominion ships rather than in retreat like the Odyssey.

Right, it would've been a scenario more like Voyager crashing into the Krenim timeship to save billions.

Wow, this is a really cool idea that would have made a lot more sense. I've said before, I like the saucer separation and even don't mind the crash landing, but it just needed to be more plausible.

They should have used a Vorcha attack cruiser at least, been less bumbling during their not-bad plan, maybe took out the shield frequency rotator with their first shot, and landed the saucer just fine on the planet, as you’d think it might be designed to do. The crew could still be transferred to a new ship, given that the stardrive was gone and the saucer took heavy damage.

This I think is the minimum that they could have done.

What I’d love for them to have done was to build a new model of the ship and make it exquisite for the big screen. Something to sharpen all the edges and add some more details.

If we were to go for a heroic exit, maybe something closer to “All Good Things...” where it blew in such a way as to spectacularly collapse the Nexus or the Veridian supernova before it hurt the anyone.
