How would you improve the bridge?

Instead of chairs for the command officer, put in a bench. That also solves the original question of there not being enough chairs in the center in case all command officers are present.

Andrew Probert explored this option in one of his early designs for the Enterprise-D bridge:

I actually really love the Enterprise bridge how it is on the series. I don’t like the additional stations from GEN as they’re the opposite of what the series was going for with the fewer stations than TOS, and the technology unchained concept.

I’d want to update the look of it though by turning everything to 11, as it were. Today’s HD screens need sharper edges, more sweeping lines, and so on, to maintain to our eyes what the bridge looked like on SD screens in ‘87. Also the main viewer is make larger still to encompass nearly the entire wall.

I’d like to “see the rest of it” too. We never saw the inside of the ramp to the Observation Lounge or the “head” (if that’s what it is) next to the door to it. Or the head in Picard’s Ready Room…what exactly do they use in the future? Do they take a pill once a week or do they in fact still use a toilet?

One thing I might change is the panels on the sides of the bridge. I wouldn’t immediately want to do too too much, but, again, sharpen the edges, minimize the pointless tech, but maybe we get to see what’s in those panels? Are they tech? Weapons lockers? Escape pods? What exactly? Maybe make one of them a replicator and another a systems display.

I wouldn't change a thing. Next to the bridge from The Motion Picture (which takes number one spot for it's simultaneous practicality and retro 70's sci-fi style) the TNG bridge is the best bridge in the fleet. As a kid, it made sense to call it the bridge because the Tactical Console itself always looked like a mini bridge (the kind that goes over a river or stream LOL) and I figured the term "bridge" was just slang for the command deck which evolved from that!*

*I saw TNG first growing up, and had no idea that "the host from Rescue 911" played the first captain of the Enterprise until I saw Generations, or "Star Trek: The Movie" as I called it at the time. :p

That arrow shaped panel that gave the bridge it's unique feature seemed like a waste of space. I mean even Picard had to jump over it just to get to the Torpedos. I don't know what you would replace it with, but I did like the Enterprise E bridge design in First Contact.

Heck no! The horseshoe or bow or whatever, the tactical station was gorgeous, commanding, memorable. It was signature TNG. The E bridge I can’t remember if it was Siskel or Ebert said looked like a security camera monitoring office. It was dark with tripping hazards everywhere, and a cluttered stone henge of consoles plopped in the middle of the room. The funny thing about that movie is that although it’s the best of the TNG ones, although the Federation is trying to repel the Borg, they seem to have been restyled by it. The drab gray uniforms, the gaunt desiccated & stretched ship, and the dark gloomy interior all just lent to an over-stylized anti-Trek vision to my eye. It was moody for the Borg movie, but who would want to live there?

^This. So much.
What I always liked about the Enterprise D is, whatever its shortcomings, it is the ship that really looks like it was designed for long-term habitation from an in-universe perspective.
The E had nothing of that. Though I still believe they probably ditched the vast majority, if not all civilian crew members in the switch from D to E (the more military haircuts sure make it seem like Mot is gone, and the writers of First Contact said there were no children on board during First Contact)

Right, right, so, we’ll get rid of the neck, you see, and make it more like Voyager! Squat and stretched, that’s cool, yeah? But dont make it a little fattie like Voyager. We’ll remedy that with the Prometheus design later. It’s going to look so cool. You’re going to love it. And it’s going to break apart in THREE ships and blow shit up! Think of the toy possibilities! Oh, and the “Equinox” (equal parts light and dark, get it?) too. And we’ll make that crew murderers, and they’ll be lead by Captain…Ransom! Perfect. And stretch the E long so it looks awkward when it’s doing anything but moving forward or you’re looking at it in a picture. And turn the weapons up to 11! The new Federation flagship is going to be a battleship, and it’s gonna fire quantum torpedoes at the last second and destroy the Borg in the big moment! Yeah. That’s right. And no families allowed on it either. Families are so gay. Anyway, yeah, and it’s gotta be a fraction of the size of the D (and maybe the C) because small is cool, like the Millenium Falcon, that’s what kids like. No labs and other adult stuff. But it has to be longer than all the other Enterprises because size counts length-wise. …yeah, anyway, I love the Seven catsuits. What do you think about putting a Vulcan supermodel in one for the next series? And let me tell you about these naked de-con gel rubbing scenes I’ve been thinking about!
