How would you improve the bridge?

Did anyone ever see the Lost in Space movie with Matt Leblanc? One supercool thing in that was the “seat belts” they used in that. Not so much belts as like mini gravity wells or suction thingies that kept people in place. I much prefer those. Now ENT, that totally should have had belts.
Hmm, sounds like it would need a power source. I think conventional seatbelts would be better, in case the power source got disconnected or broken or something.

Not everything needs to be powered from the same power source. Also, power sources in trek are batty. The seatbelt could have its own micro-nuclear reactor and last 50,000 years without being more dangerous than a AAA battery.

The Excelsior-class bridge, anyone?

Booo! Tiny redressed Ent-A bridge. Give me the original Excelsior bridge from TSFS. That reflected the size and might of the ship!

Another vote for a chair for tactical, somehow I think Worf would prefer to stand though.

Also, thinking back to 'Disaster' when the bridge turbolifts got cut off, I'm assuming that meant there was no way to get below in that situation. Maybe some kind of extra access tunnel to the jeffries tube could be an option? Unless it has one already and I'm forgetting

That's a very good point. Seems like there should be emergency accesses to Deck 1. Because I can't remember any either. Ro climbed to the bridge through the turbolift shaft iirc.

There's this bit from "Brothers"...
[Jefferies tube]
(Riker is up the ladder, Worf at the bottom)
WORF: The isolinear subprocessor extends three point five metres.
RIKER: I've got a clear path to panel J14 baker. What's that going to do for us?
WORF: J14 baker backs onto science station two, Commander.
RIKER: Have they reinverted the environmental control sequencer?
WORF: Yes, sir. Life support has been re-established.
RIKER: Then you and Casey get up here. Let's get to it.

It's unclear whether that was supposed to get them actual bridge access, though I guess that's the implication? It may have been that the route they were taking wasn't well-known enough that anyone else would have thought of it, or there were other issues utilizing it.

Most likely, with three different turboshafts plus the conference room access to the main bridge, it wasn't felt that even more access points were needed.

Gimme the bridge from Generations, just drop Riker and Troi’s chairs. This works for the E-E too.

My opinion there should only be one chair for the Captain. Riker could have worked a regular station like Spock and T’Pol (helm maybe since he was a big time pilot). And if Picard needed Troi she could have come up and stood next to him like Bones did with Kirk.

I'd say Riker's role would make the Ops/Comms/Damage Control or Tactical position more logical in general terms. In the former case, Data would move over to the Science Station.

I agree about Troi though.

yeah Troi on the bridge was just weird. I still say she just sat there and played Tetris on that little console next to her chair.

That's why i always thought they should have made her chief Science Officer and given her a science station n the bridge.

If she were science officer, what would Data do though? VHe’d be relegated to “ship’s droid,” spouting off damage reports and little else.

I grew up with Troi on the bridge and like her there. They just had no idea what they were doing with the character. It’s like if you were to do a legal show without any knowledge of the law — it’s going to be ham-fisted and not too deep. I think some of Troi’s best characterization was in PIC’s “Nepenthe.” They should have included more of that while she was in uniform. Sirtis could pull off “commanding” when called upon. What was the VOY episode where she interrogated the prostitute hired to con Barclay? When she said to her, “Try me,” you knew she meant business.

I could see Troi handling Ops in addition to being the counselor/first contact specialist, with Data handling sciences. Or vice-versa, but it seems to me more of a natural fit for the counselor to also be responsible for handing intraship functions that impact the crew.

If TPTB had wanted to be -really- daring, they would have made Data the counselor. ;)

Different folks for different counseling roles? How about different species? I think a Vulcan counselor would be a superb fit for patients that are receptive to being calmly shown the illogic of their dysfunction (such as an otherwise rational individual that tangled themselves up in faulty conclusions).

I've always assumed there was more than one counselor just as there must be more than one doctor (even if the show hadn't made that explicitly clear) and more than one restroom (can't readily recall whether any were shown).

One thing TNG was bad at by nature of it being a TV show with a regular cast was creating a stronger sense of the fact that there were a thousand people on the ship.

He'd still have his whole "understanding human emotion" character stuff.

Plus he still could do whatever OPS is.

It would be insane if the command center of the ship could only be accessed by turbolift! If the power shut down, the entire bridge crew would be trapped?

Sternbach's blueprints and Stage 9's 3D-Enterprise project (which was shut down by CBS) connect the same ramp that leads to the Observation Lounge to the deck below:
