How would you improve the bridge?

^Why would they need to waterproof the equipment in Engineering? It doesn't matter how far in the future, they wouldn't make it waterproof unless there's a need.

My laptop isn't waterproof due to "primtive 21st Century technology" but because they didn't bother to because Apple assumes we would keep the laptop away from water....
Silly Apple!

I love the aesthetics of the walkway/balcony, and I'm sure it wouldn't be long before some cheeky ensign tried to do this...

I can totally see Mariner trying this!

A clock on the bridge. Seriously, where are the clocks? They never show time on the view screen, and you don't see people pulling out communicators to check the time. There have been a couple of Starfleet officers shown wearing wristwatches over the years, but not often. I have never heard ships bells, either. So how do they know what time it is?

because engineering is a room probably filled with all kinds of pipes and fluids and coolants and water, and anything can happen, therefore anything critical should be built with that in mind.

your laptop might not be waterproof, but the controls in the engineering room of a modern ship or spaceship will be. And even an iphone is fairly water resistant now.

You don't want an intruder to be able to bring down a flagship class starship with something that cost 99¢ at every American corner store in the latter 20th century. :)

a squirt gun

Or do you? :shifty:

Not to mention, this. :techman:

Also, aren't we bags of mostly water?

Wouldn't want a little sweat to cause the shields to drop in the middle of combat.

In the picture above posted by Qonundrum there are little seats next to the seats of Riker and Troi.

I completely forgot about those; anyhow, they don't appear to be comfortable for long-term sitters.

He'd just install an Earl Gray dispenser next to his.

A Replicator would be nice, yes. People shouldn't have to walk into the Captain's Ready Room for a glass of water.

About liquids and the consoles, maybe Geordi was only worried Sonya might have to clean the consoles if she spilled her hot chocolate, it could get sticky. I would imagine a 24th century starship engineering console wouldn't get broken by hot chocolate.

Ensing Cunningham: "Captain, enemy troops have transported to engineering"
Captain Fonz: "No worries as long as they don't have any hot chocolate"

Damn it, stop watching nuTrek!

The Engineering isn't supposed to look like a Brewery.

;)

Shonzon had one next to his chair!

Also I'm not sure if we ever saw them used, but those black panels on the bridge with the plaque and the other with a yellow ship outline on it? Had replicator slots, although I never saw them until I got a modern flat TV.

Make the panels not kill people when they exploded.

So, they still explode, but they've been modified to include some sort of technology that prevents the crewmember manning the panel from being killed or horrifically maimed? Like a quick forcefield airbag of some sort?

Yeah.....I like that. It's still exciting, but it's also safe.

Yikes! That is awful. The bridge isn't supposed to be a scene out of some futuristic mall or lounge. :guffaw:
That's not a bad design for a 10 Forward-type location though.

YMMV, but the two-story bridge goes along the lines of the Technology Unchained aesthetic and philosophy Roddenberry wanted for the 24th Century. Less cold control rooms and more warm, comforting areas. Which makes sense considering the Enterprise-D was originally supposed to be on a 20-year-plus exploration mission.

It embraces more of the semi-TOS Season 1 spirit, essentially.

It's even worse than it looks. Iirc, and what I read was true, that suspended walkway thing above the bridge was supposed to be for the civilians and of-duty personnel so that they can hang out there and watch the viewscreen. That's probably also why it's so closed off from the rest of the bridge.
So if they had realized that idea, we'd have some extras portraying civilians milling about at the periphery of each scene set on the bridge. And that would have been all kinds of awful, and I say that as someone who really likes the idea of civilians on board.

The changes that were made during the show was being made were enough, stuff like the Captain's chair and walls on the bridge.

Minor version, probably take out the XO and counsellor's chairs. Maybe shrink the bridge a bit. Put in the stations from Generations and "Yesterday's Enterprise. Basically an updated version of the TOS style bridge or the Defiant.
My ideal bridge is something like the CIC from BSG or the bridge of a modern day container ship. Also rip the bridge off the top of the ship and stick it in the middle of the saucer.
