How would you have ended the show?

I think one of the issues with "Endgame" is that Janeway's actions come of as selfish. Because she lost her friends, so what if other people lost family members. Back in "Eye of the Needle" she agrees with the sentiment that they shouldn't prevent the launch of the mission that stranded them in the DQ due to the impact they have already had, what impact would they have had over the 16 more years it orignally took Voyager to get home, that was undone by her bringing them home early.
What I thought was interesting in the novels was the further impact of the future Janeway's actions. (novel spoilers coming) It talks about how using the hub like that really pissed off the Queen and the Borg went all out on the Alpha Quadrant. Billions of people dead. Of course this also lead to the total elimination of the Borg, but still billions of people died and many planets were wrecked.

In another thread, someone mentioned they would have liked to have seen the Timeless scenario used for the finale (instead of in season 5) if they were going to use time travel. I think that would have been good.

A lot of people dislike the ending of the show. I think aspects of it were good, but I didn't like the time travel aspect.

Is there anything different you would have liked to see?

My alternate ending still involved the Transwarp hub...
As they get near that nebula, Seven privately tells Janeway that there is a hub in there. They confer with the staff, some want to try to use the hub, some think it's too dangerous...eventually they decide to try to use the hub and come up with some technobabble for a shield modification that they think will let them get through the nebula undetected. When they are almost through the nebula, almost at the hub their modification stops working and they are detected and attacked. They are forced to leave the nebula but durring their escape they send a distress call to anybody that might be around and they are very badly damaged...like a necelle is gone, have to eject the core and some other bad damage. It is clear they are done forever. As they are assessing the damage they detect more borg ships coming at them from another direction and they know they are doomed. Then they are hailed and it's some of the freed Borg from unimatrix zero. They take voyager inside one of their ships and lead them back to the hub, as the other borg ships fire on the one that Voyager is in. In the end they make it back to the AQ with the freed borg and...stuff in the AQ.

sorry that was long
That's not a bad idea, but I'd add to that and say that while inside the New Borg cube, they get a quick Borg fix-it of the ship, so Voyager could approach the Federation armada on the other side under its own power, with the New Borg cube accompanying them, with perhaps, the fixed Voyager emerging slowly from the cube in view of the armada.

This is because I'm not at all sure Janeway could have prevented the armada from firing on the cube before she could make them understand that the cube was friendly, before the cube would have been obliged to defend itself.

I liked the ending. I just thought the last ten minutes needed more room to breathe. And Tom needed to show his Dad his grandchild.

How would you have ended the show?

With Janeway, Torres and Seven all having a pillow fight in engineering.

Winner takes Voyager, loser takes Harry Kim.

Voyager enters orbit of a planet on the far side of the Gamma Quadrant. Janeway checks a map. "Fuck. Tom, I told you we should have gone left at Talax"

I loved 'Endgame', thought it was a thrilling, fast-paced adventure. I also think it is essential that they got home and it was a happy ending. Twists/sad endings/bittersweet stuff I think in VOY would have just been gimmicky and would have, ultimately, left a lot of fans who had watched this crews journey feeling deeply dissatisfied.

If I was to modify the ending, it would have been somewhat subtle. I would have:

  1. Changed from the time-travel ending. I'd have had them find a transwarp hub, that for some reason is poorly defended and the bulk of the episode is them planning to attack it, use it and destroy it to get home. No morally grey time-travel stuff, it's too ambiguous for my tastes.
  2. I'd have had a decent ammount of time focused on their return. I would have enjoyed some scenes of celebration both in the immediate aftermath of the return and in the following weeks. Janeway promoted to Admiral, B'elanna/Paris and their new daughter starting a new life, Harry seeing his family, the Doctor getting all the attention he would love [from scientists etc], Tuvok returning to Vulcan...it would have been really nice to see.
  3. I'm undecided on this but, if I could tweak season 7 and scrap that bizarre Chakotay/Seven relationship, I'd have been temped to throw in some important declaration of love scene between Janeway & Chakotay. maybe even when they get home, he tells her how he feels, how he has hidden in because of the awful situation they were in but, now she is an Admiral and his career is in a grey area, perhaps they could pursue a relationship. I think, if acted and scripted well, that could be a touching end to the series as well.

Personally I would love to have Tom be present for the birth of his daughter, B'Elanna reconcile with her father (or not), Harry hug his parents and find that Libby has been waiting for him. Personal things like that

This for me as well. Even just a 3 minute montage video of everyone seeing their family and stuff. Something similar to what DS9 did. It just seems appropriate since their whole goal was for them to get home. As a viewer I would have liked to have seen them meet their goal, rather than just a few second clip of voyager flying over the golden gate bridge with fireworks. It's like trying to get the end expecting there would be cake, but there's no cake.

the cake is a lie

With music and dancing. :)

Or if that's not doable, then an arc (I know that's a dirty word) in the final season that has Voyager pitted against some alien race, and then when the ship finally falls through a wormhole or whatever and gets home, they have to help the Federation to fight this new enemy. I would have them home a couple of episodes before at least.

If you want the crew not getting home (which to be honest wouldn't be a horrible ending), I think Endgame could have been tweaked to be made more bittersweet. Keep things the same so that we see the ship coming home after 23 years, and everything is building towards what happened in the original. I'd get rid of the Borg Queen as she didn't do much in this episode, and let Admiral Janeway die fighting to save the crew one last time.

The notion Harry touches upon of the journey being more important than the destination should be played on more, and they decide to destroy the transwarp hub, but with no cheat ending to get home as well.

Obviously I would lose the Chakotay and Seven relationship. Perhaps Seven and the EMH could be together in the future, hold onto the death of Chakotay, and play to the loss of the C/J relationship that never was. I would also be tempted to lose Tuvok's mental illness, and instead have him badly injured somehow, which could happen in an attack that also kills a portion of the crew.

I wish they'd never made it back.
A long story arc could have taken them a lot closer to the Alpha Quadrant in the last season but leaving space for further exploration of the galaxy. This could have given Janeway a chance to make a speech with an emotional value of the one in CARETAKER, and she should have made us viewers understand that they'd never give up trying to get home no matter what the odds.
Someone could also have died in the last episode adding drama to the whole story. Not necessarily one of the main characters but one of the recurring cast like Samantha Wildman or Vorik or Joe Carey (if he hadn't been killed off a few episodes earlier).
This could also have meant that the story would be continued at a theatre close to you ...
And btw, this would have given us very different relaunch books. Ones that would still feel like Voyager.

Take out the time travel aspect. Especially after Chakotay's convincing speech about appreciating what they had and how they got there in ep. "shattered" just a few eps back.

Have the finale be a three/four part story, the first two dedicated to some means of getting home (no time travel storyline, out-of-the-blue romances or medical conditions, or Borg involvement though, except for the obligatory Seven saving the day moment), then have the last episode or two actually seeing them at home and dealing with all the fallout of their voyage, before what they move on to.

However they wanted the rest of the finale to go, they should've had Chakotay & Kathryn in the halls of Voyager doing something that has never been done in STAR TREK history: Breaking The Fourth Wall. They stop walking, at a certain point, they hug. They kiss. Then, Chakotay turns to the camera and say, ".... you didn't really think we wouldn't end up together, at the end, did you?" Then they head off, walking hand-in-hand, as the credits roll.

I think Voyager got exactly what it deserved with "Endgame". Rather than some temporal shenanigans that wipe the slate clean I think they should have just had some flashforwards to show us where everyone ended up, but end the show with Voyager still stuck in the Delta Quadrant.
