How would Janeway have dealt with the Prophets (and they with her)?

Janeway's background is in science, so that would have colored her approach to the Prophets.

I agree with this.

I think a Janeway led DS9 would have been very interesting. I think we would have seen a more scientific and secular view ofthe Prophets and the Bajoran religion in general. The Janeway-Kai Winn throwdowns would have been amazing.

"Counterpoint" is one of my favorite Janeway-centric episodes, and I think that the cunning, calculating version of the character we saw in that episode would have worked well when dealing with the Cardassians.

How would she deal with Eddington? Another Captain Ransom situation, maybe.

How would In the Pale Moonlight have played out?

So Janeway and the Prophets would be like T"Pol and time travel? Even after Janeway meets the Prophets, she deigns it happened? For all her flaws, I think Janeway is too smart to reject what's right in front of her.

"Okay. I just met a bunch of supernatural beings."

But she still would have been the Emissary in the eyes of the religious Bajoran people, regardless of her personal views. Do you think she would have taken up that role, if only to foster relations between the Bajorans and the Federation?

No, I don't really think she would ever accept the role of emissary. I think she would be frustrated by, but respectful of, the religious views of the Bajorans.

Imagine her indignation when she finds out that these "prophets" she refuses to see as anything else than wormhole aliens meddled in her parents' life to make sure she was born ….

I think so yes, Equinox shows that she is equally capable of 'losing it' as Sisko was with Eddington.

How would In the Pale Moonlight have played out?

I think I can see it play out exactly like it did with Sisko, though she might perhaps have been better at influencing the Romulan ambassador.

I agree with this. Janeway is one of the worst captains in history of Starfleet.
I like Janeway.
At least the Janeway we saw in the first three seasons. The lousy writers did mess her up later on.
But they actually messed up most of the characters in that show.
Which was a pity because Voyager could have been great.

As a former Science Officer, Janeway would probably have a difficult time accepting the Prophets as deities. To her, they would be wormhole aliens. If she had been The Emissary, and in command of DS9, I'm not sure if she could have made the same decisions that Sisko made, like drawing the Romulans into the war because I believe Janeway was far more idealistic than Sisko. She was a new captain with a new ship, and holding steadfast to the guiding principles of the Federation, whereas Sisko had already experienced command, and battle.

What if Janeway was the commander of the station, but Chakotay was the Emissary?

We would have a (bad) episode where his animal guides tell him to do "A" but the prophets tell him to do "B" … who does he trust more?

This thread and its responses disgust me. I didn't realize that the forum's webmasters have no problems with encouraging sexism.

No one really knows how Janeway would have dealt with the Prophets. I suspect that this thread is nothing more than another attempt on how terrible she is as a Starfleet captain. And probably because she is a woman. Once again, Trek fandom's bigotry rear its ugly head. Why on earth didn't you ask this damn question about Picard, Kirk or Archer?

As far as I can tell the only person bringing gender into this discussion is you. Everyone else is discussing the subject thoughtfully, basing their responses on Janeway's actions, not her gender. If you have a problem with a post please use the report button and explain why you find it offensive.

I actually think that sounds like an interesting idea. We see a lot of stories where the conflict involves agnosticism vs faith, but we don't see nearly as many (personal) faith vs faith stories.

I also think his ties to the Maquis would offer some story potential. Could Janeway trust him when it came to dealing with the more militant Bajoran sects?
