Don't over think it. "Special" endings always end up smarmy and trite. TUC is the perfect example.

I think that ST3 won´t end with a cliffhanger. I´m not sure if Paramount will continue releasing more Star Trek movies or if Bad Robot will also continue to have a key part of it.
Probably ST3 will end with Enterprise moving towards an uncharted star.
