How will the spore drive fit into canon?

How do you think the spore drive will fit in the larger Trek universe?
It'll be a tight fit, but they can probably squeeze it in there if they spin it around twice and drop it in vertically.

It's like how The Search For Spock doesn't fit into canon because no one uses (or mentions) transwarp drive after this point in the timeline...

It comes down to how much of an advantage it provides. The spore drive, aka the ability to go anywhere instantly, is an incredible leap over any alternative travel method. Also your ship gets to spin around while doing it, how cool is that?

That being said, I suspect the spore network will be destroyed somehow. Maybe it belongs to some entity that dies and takes the spore network with it. They did say the spore network is almost like the nervous system of the universe.

Destruction of the spore network seems like the cleanest most feasible exit IMO.

Destruction of the spore network is clean. But I think it will likely happen at the end of the series run itself, rather than at the end of the first or second seasons.

I agree that network must go or be permanently inaccessible.

I said a similar thing in one of the other threads. It gets damaged (ala Force of Nature) or destroyed either by accident or on purpose to keep it away from the Klingons.

Or Stamets becomes "one" with the network and won't allow anyone else to use it. He ends up like the Wormhole Aliens™ on DS9....or becomes the actual Wormhole Aliens™ from DS9.

147 posts in and this joke just now just occurred to me.

The Spore Drive will fit right in the stack next to the Genesis Device and Phasing Cloaks:

This is followed by a scene at Star Fleet....

Captain - I want to know who's looking after it / into it ?
Admiral - Top Men
Captain - Who ?
Admiral - TOP... MEN...

Then Just Outside Star Feet...

Captain - The fools... they don't know what they got...

~ fade to black, end season / series ~

Only for it to turn up as an Easter Egg in some later series dealing w/ Area 51, er Section 31 & Aliens, Crystal Skulls, 'er Spore Crystals, Myans, er' Klingons "YES, THEY ARE KILNGONS, but we don't talk about it to outsiders" and so on...

I think spore drive will have to be revealed to have an absolutely nasty side effect that precludes it ever being used again. Otherwise, Voyager would have risked using it *just once* to get home. Maybe each jump pushes you into a parallel universe.

Do not think so. If it still worked, the Equinox would have tried it. Voyager would have some of the crew working to make it safe to use.

Voyager's full of enough geniuses to rediscover and reinvent the damn thing if it were buried knowledge.

IIRC before the Transwarp Salamander transformation began, their biggest problem was controlling where to drop out of infinity-everywhere-speed. They'd basically come to almost the same result in a different way.

I almost think the infinity warp basically WAS the spore drive with a different activation mechanism. It would certain explain the salamandar mutation (space mushrooms triggering horizontal DNA transfer with Data's cat, which for some reason is descended from an iguana).

As much as this makes sense, trying to make sense of "Threshold" scares me O_o

In your absence, The Spore Drive has become a galactic controversy. Until the Federation Council makes policy, you are all under orders not to discuss with anyone your knowledge of the Spore Drive. Consider it obsolete technology...and a forbidden subject.

JANEWAY: I'll break each and every rule up to and including the Temporal Prime Directive to get my people home a little faster, but I won't break this one!
