Spoilers How will Season 2 work from a character continuity perspective?

I don't think Stamets will ever be the same again.

Who knows what happens to Burnham after this. I'm guessing they don't have her go back to prison. At least not permanently.

Lorca and Tyler, I think, are gone.

All you'll have who are definite shoe-ins are Saru and Tilly...

... but maybe they're doing everything they can with these characters now specifically because there will be entirely (or almost entirely) different characters next season.

I'm starting to wonder if the second season will still feature any of the same cast or characters at all. I nnow they said it would but maybe they were just scared revealing its an anthology would deter people from getting invested in the current season. It feels like by the end of this season its gonna wrap so much up that if the show is a continuation of this cast/characters its gonna be a very different show and many characters won't return.
well if they lied , canceling subscription will be much easier, i still am holding out hope that we are gonna see happy endings, in the star trek style. and that most of cast that are avail for return next season will. i honestly think that in case of lorca its his choice if he gonna come back

IIRC someone at CBS said something along the lines of "if Discovery is a success, we're renewing - if it's a failure, we'll just start an entirely new series within the Trek franchise."

anyone here know enough about how name credits work on shows? i mean is that an indicator at all for who may be back next season? i seem martin -green , shazad latif, doug jones and A. rapp have always been the lead ins in the credits trough out season, mean anything?

I'm having a hard time seeing how Shazad Latif stays on, unless Ash/Voq becomes the antagonist for next season or is a prisoner like Sharon in Battlestar Galactica.

i am watching episode 10 now, i am worried , one thing def standing between burham/lorca is tyler. lorca kills tyler? that's one way of getting rid of both of them

Well from what i read they really wanted shazad after he did penny dreadful , so much that he was given heads up or inside track on the role by one of the craters or producers that was a fan of his prior work, i guess question is where do they wanna take show, something feels very off with the klingon plot. at same time i think they saved tyler in last episode . question is why?

I wish people would stop assuming that Lorca being from the Mirror Universe automatically means that he's a "one-and-done" character.

I think it's more about the actor than the fact the character is from the mirror universe. He is a big enough star that many people have seen this story before where you get a big name actor but only for a short amount of time. He no doubt has many other projects he wants to do and no doubt comes with a hefty salary. We as Trek fans have even seen this before like Michelle Forbes not wanting to be a regular on DS9.

Jason Isaacs Instagram bio has changed since the last episode to 'starship captain length uncertain...'

Could mean nothing. Could mean *sinister voice* everything

This x 1000 and what I said in the thread I started "DISC*ACTORS* and future direction for the show". I knew from the start there was NO WAY Isaacs was gonna still be around by S3 and would in all likelihood be gone as a regular by S2. You DON'T pick a CURRENT Hollywood 'A' lister if you want them to stick around. In the original anthology model he was probably a great choice but as soon as CBSAA interfered with the show they were going to be in deep trouble with a lot of "new" fans (in particular) if Lorca proved to be a popular character - always likely, given how good an actor Isaacs is.

Where do they go from here? Well, as already stated, they either:
  1. Get a good but as yet "undiscovered" (for TV/movies anyway) actor - the Patrick Stewart route. Or:
  2. Interestingly, they could get a FORMER "A-lister" who isn't getting the roles anymore. A strategy the Guardian put forward just yesterday (not specifically for DSC). Of course they'd need to do their homework....I try not to pay too much attention to hollywood gossip pieces but Edward Norton, for example, was claimed to be very difficult to work with.

I don't think he is quite a A-Lister as of right now but his star is clearly going upwards. I think is notch bellow were some other famous character actors were in their prime such as Kevin Spacey,William Macy,Paul Giammatti and so forth. I think that is the next step and then a tv show were he is the star but also the star on a better more respected network like HBO,Showtime,AMC etc.

I also really, really believe they will go get someone to replace his stature. I also suspect they might bring in two big name stars. My gut feeling is from a diversity point of view which is clearly a factor in how shows are cast, especially in this day and and age I think they will go with another white male and add in a new gay character to replace Culber. I think next year might even be when they go with the first Transgender character. If you loose the Klingon lady and Tyler I suspect we might get a Asian character which is kind of missing and maybe a Indian character or a Native American character.

Yeah on reflection he's not quite up there with Spacey etc...yet.

I think that would be just repeating the mistake (if they intend to move permanently to the recurring cast model) - you've just got TWO big names to risk losing and altering the dynamics yet again. If they flesh out a lot more characters then this insulates them somewhat but they've been awful at doing that so far so it just plays to another of DSC's weaknesses.

I agree that it can be a mistake. You could even call it the Batman villian mistake. To top the previous villian from the previous film you instead go for bulk. That's why "Batman Returns" had Catwoman, The Penguin and Christopher Walken all in it.

I think what they are going to do is basically retool the premise. You will have one big name star that is short term and one that you can get to sign up for multiple seasons. I think they are going really focus on making Burnham more likable which something that can also turn into a bad thing because you can make a character loose whatever edge she or he, had. I think they might be thinking more along the lines of Thor though from the Marvel movies. Allow the character to get a sense of humor and frankly humor is THE big change I predict for season 2. It's one of the reasons why I don't think it's impossible we might see Mudd as a regular. Also you can't discount the possibility of seeing a "TOS" regular on the show. DS9 added Worf and I think it makes sense to do this as well.

well, if you want two big-name actors to replace Isaacs, you'd need two big name actors to replace Yeoh too, which means FOUR big name actors, that's a lot of big names.
then we would need eight big name actors for season three and it totally spirals out of control.

get two stars that are in the same league as Yeoh/Isaacs for season two and I'm totally fine with that
