How was USS Grissom destroyed so easily?

FJ's Dreadnought is a pretty logical extrapolation and progression, as are his scout/destroyer designs. It's got a certain charm I suppose!

I don't mind the dreadnought. It certainly doesn't have the grace of the Constitution, but considering its role, I can see it being a part of the same fleet. In-universe, I'm sure Starfleet wouldn't be too concerned about how attractive it was, as long as it got its job done.

And I think it's the only Starfleet ship I've ever seen that actually responds to that old criticism of "why do they have the bridge exposed on the top of the ship like that?" ;)

OP: Oh I don't know...dedicated science vessel, a non-combatant with minimal shields, taken by surprise by a BOP. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

The Klingons only fired one shot. How could the battle have been any shorter?

He could have not spent so much time yakking with Saavik!

Which would have totally made sense if that lower hull was just fuel storage that ignited when hit by the BoP's shot. And which of course brings up the question as to why Starfleet would design a ship to be so vulnerable like that.

It is not mere fuel storage, it also contains a warp core. Which makes it even more volatile. But assuming that the shields were not up, it is not weird at all that such a small ship would be destroyed by a single torpedo. In 'Generations' Enterprise destroys an unshielded BOP with a single torpedo. Grissom was a science vessel, it was not meant for combat.

It kind of begs the question of why SF didn't either send a tougher ship or at least more of them. Perhaps they were trying to avoid the attention that a larger presence might have garnered...except that given Genesis has already become controversial, it seems like the Klingon government may already know about it before Kruge gets the information.

Considering the secrecy of Genesis, I always wondered where Valkris got her copy of the promo video. Which obviously Kirk had time to remake so they didn't have to pay Bibi Besch...
