How was Star Trek edited back in the '60s?

There are lots of limitations to the photochemical matte processes, including the fact that film sometimes shrinks or stretches minutely which means even perfectly photographed elements may still exhibit matte lines or edge contamination. This is why some filmmakers and effects people eschewed photochemical mattes in favor of front projection processes like Zoptic and Introvision where possible, albeit they had limitations of their own.
 
Here's a documentary about matte painting. (The one I was looking for was from the 80s, but this one probably covers the same material.)
