There are lots of limitations to the photochemical matte processes, including the fact that film sometimes shrinks or stretches minutely which means even perfectly photographed elements may still exhibit matte lines or edge contamination. This is why some filmmakers and effects people eschewed photochemical mattes in favor of front projection processes like Zoptic and Introvision where possible, albeit they had limitations of their own.
