I missed the talk of trailers on the last page... It's interesting that in olden times they were played after the main feature, hence the name "trailer" since they trailed behind the movie. But this was deemed to be ineffective advertising because too many people would leave right at the end of the movie and ignore the trailers, and so they were moved to the beginning instead.
Having stuff play before the movie is actually a decades-long tradition now. Going to the movies was getting a whole package of entertainment, so you would see newsreels, a cartoon or two, previews for upcoming features, and an episode of an adventure serial, and then finally the main feature. But as mentioned, nowadays this has turned into trailers and some inane ads for theater concessions and rewards programs, and warnings about piracy and texting during the movie. Though at least one theater chain in recent years (I forget which one) started playing some kind of infotainment featurette, but the whole thing plays before the show start time on the ticket. So if you get there at the start time, you miss out on that completely, and just get the twenty minutes of ads.
