The thing is, there's different types of movies, some designed for polar opposite purposes. There are some movies I think are masterpieces, which I'd never want to see in a theater, as it's a very personal experience, & then there's some that don't even work on me unless I saw it in a theater, with a group
Every Star Trek movie I've seen in theaters has been magical, a transformative experience. The first one I got to see in theaters was Nemesis, and I loved it while I was watching it in theaters. Sure, later, when I started picking it apart I'd say "hey, this is kind of bad," but in theaters? It was wild, fun, and an adventure to share with the other 4 people in the theater, two of which were my friends.

That said, to this day, "Enterprising Young Men" from Star Trek (2009) *still* raises the hair on my arms and back of my neck, partially because of how awesome that scene was, but also because I still *remember* that experience, and got to experience Michael Giacchino's magnificent score in that huge theater with the absurdly powerful sound coming from all directions.

I wasn't knocking it for those that get something out of it.

The trick is to go to a Tuesday Matinee, which is what I've liked doing lately. Or to pick off-peak times. Also, I've mostly weaned myself off concession items including popcorn so that I only have to pay the price of the ticket.
Always took my own food anyway.

Cheap, more selection (I don't eat meat or animal derivatives) and nicer.

And who wants to eat popcorn in the first morning showing ?

Wow, I wish I could say the same.

TMP certainly, and Wrath of Khan too, but I saw STV, the TNG movies and the Kelvinverse stuff at the cinema too and they weren't magical.

I didn't think you were :)

In a way, I was kind of agreeing with your take, or at least partly identifying with it. Sometimes I feel like that too about certain movies, but sometimes I've seen movies that don't work all that well for me at home, but were saved by the group experience. I think @Amaris point about the Trek movies is the perfect example. I too have been to see them all in theaters, & some of them only managed to work for me in there, 5 for example. Some of the TNG ones, I think I even knew "Hey this is not so good" while I was watching it in the theater, but I still managed to enjoy myself at the Star Trek show.

Me, definitely me. If there is one thing I do love about the theater is is theater popcorn. Part of the experience.

Same here. Still get goosebumps from that scene and the music is among my favorite. Now, that film hit me at the right time, as the whole cold open is about a father, and I was seeing the film a month before my first child would be born. But, 2009 was a magical experience. I still love that film.

Nemesis was just a blast. I didn't have the same anger as my TNG fan friends. The Scorpion scene still one of my favorites scenes even in a bad movie.

There's much about Nemesis that I like. I LOVE the opening Romulus scene, we finally get to see it on the big screen! Also, I like the dune buggy scene, the Scorpion going through the ship scene, the wedding reception (long overdue!), and as always the Enterprise in all of her glory. I just feel they criminally underused Tom Hardy.

Nemesis is my favourite TNG movie. Which, to be frank, ain't saying much.
Star Trek V is my favorite TOS movie, and that says very little. Don't feel bad.
It is still a goal of mine to see Star Trek V in a big movie theater. I want Jerry Goldsmith's score to resonate from all sides, and I want to see my favorite movie on the big screen.

The novelization really fleshes out a lot of key details and, in my own opinion, would have greatly improved the film version if some of those details were present. :D Which isn't to say I consider it among the worst Trek films, but I do understand some of the major issues with it. :)

I can't see myself going to back to a movie theater any time soon. It's not the prices, though. It's the creature comforts. Theaters usually have the volume cranked so loud that I feel plastered to the back wall. It's cold. The floor is sticky. The seats creak. And there's no closed captioning. We used to go for the ones that were big to us. The last movie I saw in the theater was Crimes of Grindelwald. But I like my fuzzy blanket, recliner, closed captions, remote control far too much now.

I had A-List for a year before the world shut down and now I have three kids. We've been to the movies once since 2020 because my wife was dying to see Bob's Burgers. I would love to spend three times a week at the movies but it's just not possible for the next 18 years.

Public health protections - specifically masking up - will have to be back in place. Either that, or a permanent end to COVID-19. Last time I felt safe enough to see a movie in the cinema was either Black Widow or Shang-Chi. My memory is blurring right now on which one was more recent.

This feels like wagon makers trying to stay afloat in 1912 when thos horseless carriage thingamybobs are taking over the streets.

if it’s any consolation I chair a summer camp and we’re trying to figure out how to stay afloat.

Once Regal closed, we only have Cinema cafe theaters and recliner theaters. We saw the Quantumania movie (rather dull with poor CGI) and had to go to a cinema cafe and it had recliners too! I hate recliners. Plus, the food was too greasy, and over salted so that you have to order a drink and there are no free refills. Not only that, the server didn't return with my change, giving herself a $10 tip. I didn't pitch a fit because I figured the servers don't make squat in wages. But, the whole experience was crummy and we won't be back.

I like the experience of a humongous screen and proper surround sound. To me, certain movies must be consumed in that fashion at least once. With a number of movies, I've regretted waiting for home releases to give them my first viewing, and then wishing I had seen them in the cinema.

As for concessions, it is what it is. I like the "dine-in theaters" that have proper hot food such as burgers and chicken sandwiches and fries, a variety of pizzas, craft beers and so on. But there aren't any of those really close to where I live.

Apparently AMC has announced to investors that part of their profit making ventures is to sell their own version of microwave style popcorn...
