How to prepare for Discovery

I have a friend who is eager to start watching Disco, but is not as well versed on TOS/ENT, and wanted a primer.

My suggestion would be to watch:

TOS
  • Mudd's Women
  • I, Mudd
  • Menagerie
  • Mirror, Mirror
  • Tholian Web
ENT
  • In a Mirror Darkly
  • Affliction/Divergence

Any others?
Are there any TNG, DS9 or VOY episodes that are very relevant? He knows DS9 well, so he should be OK with section 31 episodes.

Anyway, any thoughts welcome.

Thanks!

There's enough information provided on Discovery that you can get by showing him just DSC. Once he's hooked, then you can show him the earlier stuff.

The movie that made me a Star Trek fan was Star Trek IV. I liked it so much, I wanted to see the other movies. Hopefully, after he likes Discovery, he'll want to see more.

What's the more? I guess...

"In the Mirror Darkly" (ENT). I'm not an ENT Fan, but these are okay, and they show what went on 100 years before the Disco Mirror Universe episodes. "Mirror, Mirror" from TOS too. No need need to go into any Mirror Episodes from DS9. And maybe show him "The Tholian Web" (TOS) so he can see the Space Madness was that Emperor Georgiou was talking about.

Maybe "The Cage" to show him where Pike came from. I don't think you'd need to watch "The Menagerie", unless he wants to.

For Section 31, I'd show him "Inquisition" and "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" from DS9, and that's it.

For the Hell of it, throw in both Harry Mudd episodes from TOS too. "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd". If you only want to show him one, go with "I, Mudd". Bolding intentional. By far, it's the better of the two episodes.

Might as well throw in "Journey to Babel" for Sarek, Amanda, and Spock's relationship with his family.

So, to recap, EDITED LIST (as per suggestions below):

"In the Mirror Darkly" (ENT)
"The Cage" (TOS)
"Mudd's Women" (TOS)
"The Menagerie" (TOS)
"Errand of Mercy" (TOS)
"Amok Time" (TOS)
"Mirror, Mirror" (TOS)
"I, Mudd" (TOS)
"Journey to Babel" (TOS)
"Day of the Dove" (TOS)
"The Tholian Web" (TOS)
"Inquisition" (DS9)
"Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" (DS9)

If he can't get into '60s TV, that guts most of my list.

Don't show him the two-parter about Klingon Foreheads. You want to get him to like Star Trek. And all you're doing is confusing the issue on top of it if you show him those. Sometimes, less is more. :p

You should throw at least one TOS era Klingon episode in the mix - I would suggest either TOS S1 - "Errand Of Mercy" or TOS S3 - "Day Of The Dove".

I'd also drop TOS S2 - "Mirror, Mirror" as it's in ST: D's future; and the ENT MU episodes are more directly tied to what we saw in ST: D S1 - so that episode seems extraneous even if it is a really good one. :)

The first thing I would actually do, is tell the Friend that Klingons come in assorted types and don't get hung up on the look.

I was on the fence about that, only because of the stupid forehead issue, but as long as it's explained, "It was the '60s!", he should be fine with it, I'm guessing.

Since he included ENT's S4 eps "Affliction" and "Divergence"; I don't see how/why the person watching would be confused as the Klingon augments in those episodes look exactly like Kor/Kang from the TOS era

(Now if he included the Ds9 eps. that show Kor and Kang...) ;)

I’d add Journey to Babel and Amok Time to the list for some background on Sarek/Amanda and Vulcan.

I agree TOS S2 - "Journey To Babel"

IMO TOS S2 - "Amok Time" (while a favorite of mine) doesn't have anything uniquely ST: D related for Spock for a new Trek viewer, so while I (and I'm sure others) would just say "Watch TOS" - we're trying to provide a quick but direct intro here. ;)

I was recommending against showing him "Affliction" and "Divergence"! :p

But, no big deal.

Doh! - Didn't bother to read the majority of the thread....my bad. ;)

That said, the argument FOR those episodes is it includes BOTH the two types of Klingons AND Section 31 - so it does have some stuff directly related to ST: D in the latter. :)
