I was going to say a race joke but I'm going to be the better man and not...

... something about being cheap. :p

I turn 50 in September this year--same as Trek (well--the 11-footer was around in '64)

I remember the Moon landing--before computer graphics were around--so yes--that was real.

I was a child when Star Wars came out--and graduated Class of 1985--when MTV was on top of the world--and Prince on top of that.

Each decade had its own theme--all math was by addition. We were always gaining more than we were losing--and Orion III from 2001 still seemed do-able. But we got 9/11 instead--and ever since--all math is by subtraction.

I was thinking licorice would be interesting.
I suppose there is a black licorice product out there, somewhere, that has the right amount of colouring to it to also make icing made with it black. -and would absolutely be a great taste to mix with a fruitier taste of the cake itself.

I just haven't found anything like that. All my 'licorice'-tasting stuff is either brown (home made anise infusion), yellow (pastis) or green (absinth) :(

Well, licorice flavored, but it could still be dyed black for the look.

Old enough to need an ocular implant (cataract operation). I went to high school along the same time as did Nana Visitor and Roxann Dawson, lets just put it that way.

You can get licorice ice cream here which is a dark grey colour. It's not exactly attractive but it tastes good.

. . . And who are the other 60somethings? I'm one of them.
I turned 13 the month after Star Trek (the original) premiered on NBC, so you can do the arithmetic. I remember when seatbelts in cars were a novelty, everyone smoked, and the IBM Selectric typewriter was the state of the art in high-tech office equipment.

Yep, I'm old.

I was 15 when STAR TREK premiered. I grew up in the age when all TV was black & white, except for in the 'special' corner of the TV department in the department stores. And color was only broadcast during special hours and programs.

That fall of '66 was a revelation, with all prime-time shows going to color on all three networks.

I've long suspected that this particular forum was quite a bit younger than I, and the results so far are confirming that.

Yeah, but from 8 to 80, we all mean well! :techman:

I was 9 in '66, and I shared your revelation about that year and Color TV...I still get a kick out of seeing some of the old Motel signs, advertising "Color TV"!

Time it was...

Nana isn't that old IRL :) She's like quicksilver and terribly nice and funny. I've always found tat there's a huge difference between your theoretical age (as deducted from your birth certificate) and your actual age, i.e. the way you feel and/or appear.

Welcome to the board, Six of Twelve! Cataract surgery sounds horrible to me - I'd freak out if someone would actually cut my eyes open while I am conscious. But with that implant you're a bit closer to Borgdom. Was that the reason you picked your username or have you alweays been a fan of the Borg?

I had mine done last year. Wasn't nearly as scary as it sounds. They give you twilight anesthesia. You're barely conscious, not wide awake and alert.

I'm a bit apprehensive about cataract surgery, but it beats the last five years of being legally blind and una

Argh, it hit send before I was ready. Continuing, it beats being legally blind for the last five years and being unable to drive or read print books. Kindle and anything with reverse colors, I.e. Night mode, is ok for now. I access this site on my phone in night mode, or else it would be a real chore to use it with white background and dark text, as white is as dazzling to me as it is to look into someone's high beams when driving at night.

Oh, Rhubarbodendron, I chose the designation Six of Twelve because I'm fascinated by the Borg. I am Six of Twelve because I'm the sixth of my maternal grandparents' twelve grandchildren. I liked that better than Three of Three, as the youngest of my parents' children.

Oh, I was eight years old on the night Star Trek premiered in 1966. I also remember how TV took about two years to completely convert over to color. I have all the Hogan's Heroes DVDs, with each episode from the first and second seasons in 1965 and 66 showing the station identification from CBS at the beginning of each episode: CBS...in color! I remember another network announced each show as being "In living color" - I remember them doing that for the Disney show on Sunday evenings. But by 1967, they'd ceased with these station identifications calling attention to the fact that it was in color.

Six of Twelve, I understand how you feel. I was born legally blind. I can read decently but I'll never drive.

I'm sorry for your troubles.

ABC was the first to dump its network color ID. They used it sparingly before 65, and then for all of the color shows in 65-66 (not many).

By the fall of 1966, when everything primetime went color on ABC, each program supplier would have its own color announcement.

On CBS, they used a similar device, except the letters CBS rolled in from the top an bottom, instead of the side. The CBS eye then moved in changing the letters to three different colors.

CBS continued that through the 66-67 season and maybe a little beyond.

NBC was the most famous with its colorful peacock device that they started using in a slightly different form in the 50s. Starting with the show LARAMIE, they used this one and stuck with it for years, including every STAR TREK.

I'm currently using the peacock in my Avatar.

My parents bought their first colour TV some time in the 70s, if I recall correctly. I still feel totally comfortable with the old black and white movies and sometimes don't even consciousely realize that the colours are missing until someone remarks on it LOL.
I still recall the very first run of TOS (in black and white =) ) and how my brother and I were allowed to stay up longer and watch the moon landing. And I heard the Beatles live on the wireless (with tubes as transistors had not yet been invented =) ). The first pocket calculators and quartz watches came around when I was in my late teens.
And in case you wonder: I was born right in the middle between the first airings of episode 1 and 2 of "The Keys of Marinus" :D
