Not if she married John and had a son (or a daughter) with him, and after losing him in the Borg attack, married Karl years later.

I don't think it would have necessarily changed a single thing plot-wise. But then DS9 would have been the one to have the first female lead captain, not VOY. And the first Trek female lead captain would've been well written.

Deep Space Nine had the first black captain as a main character, and Voyager had the first female captain. I assume the powers that be thought if they made Sisko the first black and the first female captain, heads would explode or something. Heck, add a disability on top of that, and the entire Earth would go boom. Then make female Sisko gay, and the Universe as we know it would cease to exist! :P

the Ben-Jake dynamic would have been different, because a mother-son relationship is very different from a father-son, or if they made Jake a girl, then a mother-daughter relationship.

Also, I think they would have changed Sisko's character to be less of a "tough guy," punching Q, intimidating Worf, etc. Having Kira as a badass already would make it two badass female characters at the top of the show.

While Beyonce Sisko () might not have punched Q (though I don't see why she wouldn't, he seriously needs it), I could totally see her intimidating Worf as much as Benjamin did. To run a place like DS9, the CO would need to be tough, whether they were male or female.

Also I doubt any of us would live long enough to see a female Captain and First Officer on the same series.
