How much homage?

For the purposes of this thread, let's use this definition of homage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homage_(arts)

I personally don't need to see a lot of this. In later Trek (ENT and Kelvin timeline) I think at times it's been abused to the point of pandering, for example the infamous Kirk death scene in Into Darkness. However sometimes it's been a useful part of the plot, for instance ENT's In A Mirror, Darkly and the USS Franklin in Beyond.

My point being, I'd like Discovery to be recognizable as Star Trek. I want to see Star Fleet, Starships, Division-associated colors, themes such as an optimistic view of the future, etc. But I'd like the writers to avoid retreads of scenes and plotlines, throwaway references to other Trek, and other tired "homage".

What do people think about this?

Me too.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a couple homages:

- The inevitable ENT cameo in the pilot episode (most likely T'Pol)

- The Farragut disaster

Minimal homage. I want it to be as bold as TOS was, upgraded to reflect current progress made in the last 50 years (which other Trek's have done almost none of) to actual show the future and not a re-stylized 1964 vision of the vision.

But I'm 99.9% sure it won't happen. Shows these days don't take any risks.

Nothing wrong with taking a few risks. Just as long as they don't spend the whole series doing nothing BUT that.

As @Bones said, DSC should still be recognizable as Star Trek.

I would like to see the homages (is that the correct plural?) take the form of things or places that we saw in ENT or will see in TOS. More in the form of evolutionary in working toward TOS.

To me, that would serve the plot and series better than forcing a young TOS character cameo or an older version of an ENT character. If it works for a point in the story, it will be enjoyable.

A shot of the main view screen as seen from the captain's chair, with the helmsman in the shot.

The helmsman slowly looks back over his right shoulder at the camera,
the look on his face says "are you seeing this shit?"

followed by a short laugh track
Every single line of dialog should be immediately followed by canned laughter.

And the next shot shows a completely different navigator...

I wouldn't mind seeing the Farragut story told in DSC, however it would take some good writing to avoid the story getting all bound up around Kirk.

They don't even have to SHOW Kirk. Have him call down a damage report from the bridge or something, but Kirk doesn't have to appear.

Oh who am I kidding. You know he will.

I hope they stop paying homage to the Nazis. Watching Voyager's "The Killing Game" and asking "Why? Why? Oh God why must we revisit the Nazis?" And they did it in "Enterprise." What's the fascination? The uniforms? Did they do it TNG and DS9?

It depends on the level of homage.

When it comes down to stories that rehash elements, or even worse ones that take an off-hand line of dialogue from a show made 50 years ago and weaves a plot around this obscure piece of continuity, I'm less convinced. For the former see something like "The Naked Now"; for the latter, see much of Enterprise's last season. I'd rather see fresh ideas and a new approach.

But if it's like design aesthetics that carry over, like the 'blinkies' under the viewscreen, that kind of little nuance that blows a kiss to the past without being *too* obtrusive, I can get behind that.
