How much are you influenced by television?

I'm watching a show in which people are unclogging drains. I just got up and unclogged the drain to my bathroom sink.

How much are you influenced by television?

I don't think what I watch has any great influence on my behavior and certainly not my buying habits... I do work at a local station though so there's that.

I might be smarter if there was no TV since I could otherwise be reading more... or just watch more movies.

Television influences people more than they realise. The whole culture of television has in fact had a profound effect on Western society in general.

For instance, the phrase "press the red button" has changed its meaning. In the old days, pressing the "red button" would be frowned upon, leading to much disapproval and dissatisfaction due to the receiver being turned off. Nowadays, in the more enlightened "digital" age where interactive "services" are more commonplace, we are encouraged to "press the red button" in order to interact with the box and access new depths of knowledge, leading to greater intensities of pleasure and satisfaction, with a sense of instant gratification.

But enough about sex. This topic is about television....

I'm a member of a Interned discussion board devoted to a tv series developed more than 40 years ago in the other side of the planet. I would say "quite influenced", yes.

Maybe it was on HGTV. That damn network can suck you in with anything!

I will say that HGTV has made me very much want to buy a house. I really don't watch much TV at all, but I was at a friend's house, and they were watching HGTV.

Also, the phrase "What the french toast?" has become a regular part of my vocabulary:

I'm kind of doing the thing Kirk did when he saw Spock swimming with the Whales at that comment!

As a more serious answer to the OP, I like to think that I have my own mind to asses things I see and hear, but acknowledge that most of what I see and hear is from the tele so my opinions will be skewed by that because most of my source information is.

I'm not influenced at all, but my children Spock, Fonzie, and Trapper John have a different idea about that.

I try not to be too influenced, with one exception. Any product that gets itself written into the actual story of a show I'm watching guarantees that I'll avoid buying it at any cost. Cars, contact lenses, dedoderant, movies...that's just a few so far.

Perhaps not the desired influence, but it is an influence.
