As the count goes up every time the profile is viewed (either by you or a repeat visitor) I don't know what is the real number of unique visitors to my profile.

One way to PM somebody is from their profile page, so I've done it for that reason.
I've also accidentally clicked on names before like you said. When I do it, it's usually because my browser has moved things around when finalizing the layout and what I had intended to click on the instant before has moved. So annoying!
