How long is Dr. Who on the air now?

Aquehonga

Fleet Captain
Its the longest running sci-fi series yes?

Didn't Who begin around the same time the "Twilight Zone" first premiered?

That's really an amazing feat:beer:

But there was a 15 year break in which only one TV movie was made.

True, it hasn't always been on since it started. But it's still by far the longest running sci-fi show, even just counting the Classic run (which lasted 27 years).

I've always been fascinated by the fact that, for fifteen years, Doctor Who peripheral media was going so strong as to keep the franchise alive and kicking. Novels, magazines, Big Finish audio adventures, comic strips....hell, the TV Movie itself! Very few franchises can claim the same sort of life-after-pause that Doctor Who established. The 8th Doctor...who has only one screen so far....has more stories and adventures to his name than Tom Baker's seven years on-screen. That's pretty incredible, considering he had to hold the franchise together for longer the half the time it was on the air.

Now that it's rejuvenation has bolstered it into a new 'Golden Age', I can easily see peripheral media and fandom keeping the series going for at least another twenty-years after it takes 'The Next Great Pause'... ;) :techman:

Doctor Who began the day after the Kennedy assassination, 23rd November 1963, and ran continuously for 26 years until 6th December 1989. The TV Movie (a BBC/Fox co-production and a failed attempt to revive the series in the states) was broadcast on 27th May 1996, and the series proper returned on 26th March (Easter Saturday) 2005 and is still running, albeit with this year having no full series, just specials. :)
