How I Met Your Mother: The Final Season

Why. Does. Anyone. Have. To. Die?

But hey, people have already guessed the deaths/illnesses of everyone else by now.
If I make a list of all character names and say they die or get sick, I will eventually get one right.

Everyone? So my theory that the Slutty Pumpkin, who we find out in the finale is the real mother of Ted's daughter, dies along with Scooter, who she is eloping with, and Ranjit, who was driving them to Vegas, isn't original?

I've always viewed HIMYM with a tragic undertone; I would expect it to end in a similar manner or else it would seem a different flavor of show.

I've seen some mention that the producers are using the Cheers finale as inspiration for their own ending; and it makes me wonder if HIMYM will also come full circle. The ongoing thread has been Ted and Robin since day one; and the two characters even had a deal that they would end up with each other if they were still alone at a certain age.

What if the mother is dead in the future; but Barney is dead too. It could lead to closure of the Ted / Robin relationship as they end up together after all (but perhaps more as partners than lovers). The audience (which includes Ted's kids) has been invested in Ted and Robin; and so far the build up to Ted's last profession of love has been rather anti-climatic. Having Ted and Robin end up together in the end could be the gentle positive note following tragedy that I've come to expect from the show.

Consider this - has this long story Ted told his kids not really been about the mother at all? Is Ted instead tackling the difficult task of explaining to his kids why he's about to marry Robin?

The finale is a group shuffle to the tissue box, but then they walk into the street and are all hit by a bus in front of McLaren's patrons.

How am I going to keep from crying like a little girl in front of my wife and kids during the finale? And that's for a normal ending, let alone one in which the Mother dies.

Would be kinda an odd final season if we spent the entire season dealing with Robin's wedding, only to skip ahead at the end with 'oh, well the groom (and my friend) eventually died, so now I'm gonna marry her instead. Sorry for wasting your time with that other wedding story'

If the Mother dies, the only way I can see a happy ending for the show is with Ted ending up with Robin. But I absolutely can't picture them killing off Barney. And Barney's death couldn't allow for a happy ending in that case either. I think we'll be in for a tear jerker no matter what.

Granted, they showed why Barney and Robin shouldn't be together, but I thought the entire show proved that Ted and Robin made a horrible couple. I only see them getting together in a "Well, the true loves of our lives are dead, we're tired of the dating scene, let's just do the inevitable and get married."

I also think it would ruin the whole, "Ted has to let go of Robin to find the one true love of his life," theme the latter half of last season and this entire season has been showing us.

would be funnier if they used the now adult version of the kids, just to joke about how long that story took... :)

You still remember this one? One of the most hilarious parts of Mother :guffaw::guffaw:

IMDB says he's there, but they probably pencilled that in before season nine started.

It's probably 50/50, if Saget isn't in the episodes where the Mother and Ted are looking back on the past from shortly before she dies.

Sigh. He's done voice overs. There's no reason to think he won't continue to until we know for sure because he sat out one episode. (According to Wikipedia, he's been in 18/19 episodes this season.) There's also no confirmation the Mother is going to die. In fact, Cristin Milloti says the idea is crazy. She doesn't flat out deny it but...

Has anyone floated the idea yet that Ted is crying about Mother's Mother dying right before their wedding? It would be unexpected b/c Ted not her is the one crying but Ted is the woman in the relationship

I absolutely don't want the Mother to die. But after the last episode and going back to watch the episode where Ted desperately wants an additional 45 days with the Mother, it seems very very likely to me that she will die. But based on that interview, I guess it isn't as likely as I thought, although I still won't be surprised.
