Most motor proteins are powered by the hydrolysis of ATP to ADP. ATP synthase from ADP and flagella are powered by a proton gradient.

There are something like ten different types, driven by electron transport, ATP, light or pyrophosphate, and they seem to have evolved independently more than once. I have no idea which sort came first, but the establishment of a proton gradient across a membrane is obviously fundamental to terrestrial biology.
