How established are Transporters in TOS?

...I wonder why that particular spot was chosen. Did Pike fear the castaways would ambush his team? Did he want to surprise them? Why the "let's not take chances" approach? Kirk was seldom that timid.

Okay, I gather Pike would have been having second thoughts about how a bold starship CO ought to act, after the Rigel VII debacle. This might have been a highly atypical day for him, there being plenty of preceding and succeeding adventures where he would adhere to the Kirk Gold Standard.

Pretty sadistic of them, considering Spock's limp...

(I do love our first-ever exposure to transporter technology. Great use of the set, of the effect, and of the dramatic concept! And the walk basically helps establish that the transporter isn't a fatally powerful deus ex machina: it won't take our heroes everywhere or out from everywhere in all circumstances, but is slave to tactical concerns, aka needs of drama.)

Get those steps in.

Kirk says, "I'll explain it in more detail when I see him. The ship won't land, but we'll transport several people down. Well, that's a little difficult for you to understand, too. I'll explain it in more detail when I see you. Where will be convenient?" Based on this tidbit, I assume the Horizon itself landed, and not those puny ENT shuttlepods.
