How do the new Star Trek shows compare to The Mandolarian?

It looks like Disney is vastly increasing the amount of live action Star Wars in the near future:

Star Wars traditionally has not been involved in live action television, but that has changed with streaming, so now Star Wars and Star Trek will be competing for eyeballs in the streaming wars.

With that in mind how do you think the Mandolarian compares with the current Star Trek shows?

I very much enjoy The Mandalorian, even over PIC and LD. The Star Wars show does an excellent job in respecting and using the Star Wars lore (even referencing certain characters in the Star Wars EU), while at the same time, trying to create a new experience.

The episodes are very short though, with a 35-40 minute runtime on average. Anyone can jump in and watch, regardless as to the level of knowledge they have of Star Wars. Even though there is a general story arc, they also work by themselves as self contained episodes.

PIC requires you to be familiar at the very least with Picard in TNG, and the events of Nemesis. LD has a lot of self-referential jokes that only those who have watch the previous Trek series will get. DIS is meant for beginners to Trek, although anyone familiar with Trek will give it a try. Viewers don’t have to know anything about any of the previous incarnations of Trek when watching DIS, although it will definitely allude to them.

The Mandalorian, much like The Orville, seem to be able to scratch the itch for traditional Star Trek.

The only person I know who has seen both definitly prefers The Mandalorian. Interestingly, one of his biggest criticisms of 'Kurtzmann 2
Trek' is that it is a space opera, but he thinks The Mandalorian is a good space opera.

Mind you, he hates the Sequel Trilogy, says Rey is as bad as Michael Burnham!

This is one of the rare instances of a poster (me) thinking better of what they just typed.

It's probably more use comparing the franchises relationship with the TV shows.

Star Wars is in dire straits creatively, if not financially. Although I love Rogue One and Last Jedi, Solo was somewhat underwhelming and JJ produced two abhorrent sequels. The market was saturated and revenues were dipping. Mando was the perfectly pitched reset. Reverential but innovative, action focussed but with a huge heart. It's wonderful and has gone some way to restoring my faith.

I can't help but fear too much TV will suffer as the movies did.

Trek belongs on TV. We can forget the disappointing Next Gen movies and the (shudder) Kelvinverse movies. I love Picard and Discovery. If not Lower Decks.

TV for trek isn't a reset from the bad movies, it's a return home.

If I had to pick one series from Mando, Disco and Picard, it would be....Mando. But Disco and Picard mean more to me.

That doesn't mean it's not fun to contrast and compare them, this is the first time Star Wars went into a live-action TV series, which is where Star Trek has been most at home since the 60s.

"I love Star Trek. Always have, always will.
THAT BEING SAID.
The Mandalorian is succeeding where no Star Trek show ever has. Whereas every Star Trek series has lackluster episodes, even if they are few and far between, The Mandalorian is consistently the best Star Wars production since the Original Trilogy. Every single episode is flawless, and practically perfect. I can think of dozens of Star Trek episodes I don't like, from every series, even The Next Generation, which I adore. Maybe I'm just getting tired of Star Trek. Maybe Star Wars in its core was better the whole time. Maybe it's just the Mandalorian (I swear, I've never loved any Star Wars movie or show this much). I don't understand. Help!"

I don't have the same connection to Star Wars that younger fans might so I like DISCO and PICARD more than the Mandalorian. Though I'm kinda up to speed having binged Clone Wars and Rebels before MANDO came out. Still the level of fan service/wank seen in MANDO would set Trek fans howling in rage if it was a Trek show.

This I don't get. I'm 57 and saw Star Wars 13 times at the cinema when it came out. I have a massive connection to it. At that time I was already into Star Trek to the extent that I started buying novels around that time, but SW blew my mind and changed my life. It was a truly pivotal event.

Mando's the best thing since the original trilogy. That said, SW has waned somewhat in my affection over the years, whereas Trek just hasn't. DS9's still my favourite TV show and probably always will be.

I've considered myself first and foremost a Trek fan for many years.

I’ve always been a much bigger Trek fan than Star Wars but The Mandalorian is heads and shoulders better than Disco and Picard.

And I don’t see that as a put down to Disco, Picard, Lower Decks or the Short Treks. I like them all.
