How do I make money in STO?

So Im still a bit new to STO, probably had it for a few weeks, but I play it regularly. On that note, I still have no bloody clue how to make money or anything. Everything is so complicated....all I want is the Constitution refit

Which currency are you trying to accumulate?

At level 8 you are barely out of the tutorial... give it time.
Playing an MMO and understanding all these details and systems is a long term thing.

When you get to level 9, you can start dilithium mining, but it could take you a while to get that ship, as you would have to buy it with zen, which you can transfer the dilithium to zen. And can buy zen too also. But won't be at that level for that long. You should get a free ship at ltcmdr.
^ Zen can't be earned from selling equipment and weapons. That is energy credits. Zen can only be either purchased with real money, doing surveys via ARC or converting dilithium to zen. Doing doff assignments is also a way to earn dilithium.
The mining can be done at Vlugta Asteroid Field, which is near DS9. You need to be at least level 9, and need to have an environmental suit also. Don't buy one there, as the Ferengi will charge zen for it. Best to get it from the exchange. Much cheaper.

Dilithium is an end-game currency. You don't worry about it till you're level 50 or 60.
STO has a maximum level of 60. End game is when you reach the last level. You will also hear reference to end game content. This is what you do when you reach level 60.

If you're hurting for energy credits, or just need a good safety net should you need credits for repairs, I would be glad to send you a couple of high value items that you can sell to vendors. You can tell me your STO username and I'll send it right to you in-game. Your username is your character's name plus the handle you registered with. For example, my main character's name is Akarian, and I registered with STO under the username Sarek2165 when I first subscribed, so my mailing address (in the game) would be Akarian@Sarek2165 in the game.
