How bad will the show be hurt if Lorca leaves the show after season 1?

Discovery seems to be starting at a grim-dark place with unlikable characters so that the audience can watch them grow and find redemption over the course of the series. It seems to be moving at a slower pace where the story is being drawn out so it will take a while as if the show is designed to be binge-watched later. The best description I can give is that Discovery is being told in the same way a show like Breaking Bad was (hopefully DIS ends on a positive note). The closest Star Trek has ever come to this is the latter seasons of DS9.

I don't see Lorca surviving to series' end. With the new backstory we have for him, I see him being killed off through self-sacrifice instead of sacrificing his crew.

I just had a thought. One option I felt they might do is to do a character swap were we replace a character with their mirror universe counterpart but then I thought also about how Fuller's idea when he created the show was kind of inspired by "American Horror Story." What if they killed Lorca but had the actor play a brand new character in season 2 that has nothing to do with Lorca?

We have seen this done in trek before such as James Sloyan being the guy I most think about since he seems to have like 5 great characters or Jeffrey Combs. We have also seen actors become regulars after at first being a guest star on trek such as characters like Quark,Odo,Paris and etc. It would be a little different to see a regular play 2 different characters both as series regulars but I think it would be interesting.

Is there a reason to think that Isaacs truly is leaving the show? Some rumor of some sort that I've missed? Or is this just truly a speculation thread?

I think it's just speculation, I've not seen anything quoted or hinted at his departure.

Like many I think he is my favorite character and I think he is also the best actor though that shouldn't be a shock since he came to show as a movie actor. Do you think the show would be able to be just as good without him or would years from now would his leaving be called the "jump the shark" moment of the show?

Me I think if he leaves you got to at least replace him with a actor of his caliber. I think Rain Wilson as Mudd being bumped up to the main cast or Georgiou being brought back would help fill that gap if they just wanted to use people already connected to the show.

Me I would actually try and bring in two actors to fill him and those two would work though I think it would be better if at least you had one new character who can provide some mystery and we have to get to know.

I think he probably will be killed off or leave in some other fashion. I think The show is about the redemption of Burnham and how she ends up leading the crew, maybe in some top secret mission or alternate reality. The success of the show depends on how much the audience likes Burnham. Right now I definitely prefer Lorca and Stamets to her as a character.

The only role where Saru “has what it takes” is the role of main course.

Preferably roasted and with an apple in his mouth.

Captain Lorca gets to carve and has first dibs on the threat ganglia.

Those little threat ganglias look to be about the size of a good craw-fish tail, so we'll fry 'em up in jalapeno cornbread dressing. Sriricha blue cheese dip on the side.

Finally found a use for that alien. I wonder though, does this make me a Klingon? 'Cause if it does, I ain't wearing that shit on my head and will likely have to skip this meal.

Yeah its pretty hard to talk or even eat with all that prosthetics, I must admit Saru has grown on me in episode 5, it helps that he finally realised that he was the problem not Burnham.

Speaking only to the actual character of Saru, he did grow a lot in this episode. The problem I have with him is the alien part of him, which is really the dumbest idea for an alien since the Xindi. At least the Xindi looked cool, as Star Trek aliens go, but Saru is just butt ugly. If his character continues to grow and becomes interesting, I'll probably get around it. Something I never could do for those damned Ferengi creatures. LOL
