Discovery seems to be starting at a grim-dark place with unlikable characters so that the audience can watch them grow and find redemption over the course of the series. It seems to be moving at a slower pace where the story is being drawn out so it will take a while as if the show is designed to be binge-watched later. The best description I can give is that Discovery is being told in the same way a show like Breaking Bad was (hopefully DIS ends on a positive note). The closest Star Trek has ever come to this is the latter seasons of DS9.
I don't see Lorca surviving to series' end. With the new backstory we have for him, I see him being killed off through self-sacrifice instead of sacrificing his crew.
