How are Sarek and T'Pau related?

Side note: Is T'Rama the first major character to appear first in a SNW story ("A Girl For Every Star") and then graduate to mainstream Treklit?

Whereas I always went for the latter assumption--that T'Pau wasn't a part of the family per se, but that Spock's family was simply important enough that that kind of ceremony would call for the presence of a prominent, famous Vulcan like T'Pau.

The possibility also exists that T'Pau was there because T'Pring's family was the prominent one, and not Spock's.

In 40+ years of watching Trek it never once occurred to me that T'Pau might be related to Spock.

I always thought she was just the QBW* of Vulcan.
