The first 2 seasons were quite a downer, that's why they are my favourite.
Rimmer & Lister hate each other and there's virtually no life of any sort encountered and the Cat isn't around enough to break the tension between them, miserable music, grey sets, a monotone Holly. I think they brought Kryton in to insert a bit of slapstick relief in to distract from the depressing concept. Especially when they realised the Cat was only good for one joke

I don't think it needs wrapping up.
It needs not to have silly cliffhangers left dangling, but i'd be quite happy with them condemned to wander the lonely stars for the rest of their lives. That was the feel of the show to start with, depressing and hopeless.
