Hollywood icon Tony Curtis, RIP

Quite the versatile actor, I remember him from "Some Like It Hot", "The Count of Monte Cristo", "Captain Newman MD", and "Operation Petticoat" so well.

I wonder how many people would have looked into this thread, had I entitled it "RIP Bernie Schwartz".......

Anyone else remember "Taras Bulba" with Yul Brynner? I caught that on TCM recently.

That's the name of a "Darkwing Duck" character! :guffaw:
I wonder if that's where they got the name. On screen and by reputation, this man was an odd fellow. I believe the only films I've seen him in were "Spartacus", where he memorably had a (deleted?) homoerotic scene with Lawrence Olivier, and "Some Like It Hot", where the only thing I didn't like about an otherwise perfect movie was his character, because it was such a lying, phony jerk to Marilyn Monroe's (as usual) delightful character. It was quite an irritating performance too, surrounded by wonderful ones.

The funniest bit of trivia I've read about him was that when he played that annoying, obnoxious character, he thought he was doing a Cary Grant impression, and in response, Cary said, "I do NOT sound like that" :). This, along with his quote about Marilyn Monroe made him fascinating to me. So yeah, Tony Curtis, not a favourite actor of mine by a long shot, but definitely an original. Gotta respect him for being a little more quirky than your average leading man.

I loved him in everything I saw him in -- particularly "The Persuaders."

RIP, Tony. You were cool as hell. :(

I always liked him in almost everything he did. Good actor, who lived to a pretty decent age and made a lot of worthwhile entertainment. Not a bad epitaph, that.

I gave thought to a thread title like "A different kind of Weekend At Bernie's" or "The Schwartz Is No Longer With Us". But you can never quite tell how something like that will go down.
