I always just thought Will had exceptionally high standards. There are many people like this who are not elitists. They have expectations that they adhere to rigidly, and view anyone else who does not do the same as being slackers, and they develop a sense of contempt.
I think that people such as Geordi and Will worked really hard to get where they are, and consistently perform at a high level. When they see someone else not living up to the standards and expectations they set for themselves, they feel that this person is "dead weight" so to speak. Haven't we all had a coworker who is obviously not doing her job while we are working really hard?
In this episode I believe that the senior officers had to deal with this and accept Reg for who he is, and encourage him rather than be angry with him. This was an excellent example of both sides needing to learn and change: Reg needed to become more professional, and Geordi needed to be a little less demanding and more compassionate.
All that being said, I dislike holodeck episodes as much as time travel episodes. Sometimes it can be used well, but most of the time it raises too many questions and just feels awkward.
