Hobbit: Battle Of the Five Armies anticipation thread

It's like they filmed the theatrical version, then tried to film Thrain inserts to play the same scene a second way for the EE, but it didn't come off very well.

I've heard it said it was the other way around, but I don't know the basis for that.

it was $30 at Target and Best Buy!

Here it was $22.99 at Target and Best Buy ( who actually didn't even stock the product even though they put it in their ads that go out to everyone in the region who gets a newspaper - good one!! ). I would have checked WalMart but they don't put movies in their weekly ads anymore. Just toys and ****. :scream:

What are the "Five Armies"? I count dwarves, elves, and orcs.

The men from Lake Town. And the Eagles.
So really, it's...

The Hobbit (sort of): The Battle of the Four Armies,
Plus an Avian Air Force

Yeah, wasn't it actually six armies in the end?

In the book the five armies are men, elves, dwarves, goblins (orcs), and wargs (wolves) , plus an avian air force. I always thought that was pushing it. The goblins and wargs were essentially one army.

The Rankin-Bass animated version said it was men, elves, dwarves, goblins/wargs, and eagles.

Also, don't know if anyone else has complained about this, but I can't get over how many of the main dwarves don't look particularly dwarvish. They just look like scaled-down humans.

Or just plain humans. That's bugged me, too.

A lot of things have to happen in the third film - isn't there a Dwarven army that at this point has to come out of nowhere since they weren't seen (or I think mentioned) in the first 2 films?

"I urged him to march upon Erebor... to rally the seven armies of the dwarves." - Gandalf

I'm wondering if one of the guys left in Lake-town will go and get them.

I'm either thinking of the book or the Rankin-Bass movie, but I believe Thorin sends a messenger to Dain once he claims the Lonely Mountain.

Guess that's just an inherent problem of the adaptation - make them too "plain dwarf"/Gimli-looking, and there's no telling them apart even on a visual level; make them too distinctive, and some don't look particularly non-human. I think they found a good middle position, but I can understand the disagreement...

I love the way the Dwarves look in the movie. You couldn't have had twelve hairy Gimlis. You needed a noble hero... a romantic interest.... a sage old elder... I think they did an excellent job of making them all very different from each other visually and in personality.

Yes, in the book Thorin has one of the descendents of talking ravens that lived on the mountain to send a message to Dain.

Yeah, while I can't say I'll instantly recognize all of them, I've come pretty close. That's impressive because I certainly couldn't tell them apart in the books.

As great as the book is, it's a swiftly told children's tale with not that much depth to it. So I'm really enjoying the way Jackson et al are fleshing it out into a proper LOTR prequel.

Agreed. I think that for the most part they did a fantastic job with the Company. The only problems I have are with Nori's ridiculous hair and with Kili. With Thorin and Fili (the two other "handsome" Dwarves) they at least gave Richard Armitage and Dean O'Gorman prosthetic noses and decent beards to make them look more like Dwarves, but they didn't do anything for Aidan Turner. He isn't wearing any prosthetics and just has a stubbly beard. He looks more like a pint-sized Aragorn than a Dwarf.

They made Thorin, Kili and Fili all look more human so we'd be more attached to them. It'll maximize the hurt when...well, you know.

Honestly I'm a little surprised he didn't have any of them die in the first two movies just for dramatic purposes. Only a few of the Dwarves' fates are known beyond The Hobbit, the rest of them are left hanging.

Yeah. Thorin and Fili look like they belong with the rest of the Company, though. They could have done more with Kili. All he needs is a less human-looking nose and just a slightly thicker beard and he'd be fine.

Sad day, people. Last night I finished every single part of the Smaug EE bonus features. :sobs:

As always it was fascinating fun and informative. I most interested to learn about how they had to restructure the story when they decided to add a third movie. The additional footage was almost entirely in the second movie, including the elf/dwarf love triangle and the Dwarves vs Smaug sequence. (also, they added the first film's climactic fight between Thorin and Azog)

In the earliest, earliest draft of the two parter, the break point was when they got to the Hidden Door of the Lonely Mountain. In the filmed version of the two-parter, the first film's climax was Barrels Out of Bound and the cliffhanger was Bard showing up. The opening scene of movie two was the Dwarves on the boat with mysterious Bard.

So, I was wandering around google image search for a good Battle of the Five Armies wallpaper, and the odd random LOTR related image appeared here and there, but this one really stood out:

Pity it's not all of Middle Earth but it does concentrate on the regions visited in this trilogy.

Interesting scene...
Though she made me magical and have strength associated with the fact that she has magical abilities, the look of her carrying Gandalf doesn't quite look.. seems more like Cate is carrying something green which is then replaced by putting Gandalf over it.

Good scene though. Saruman is awesome
