"historical" episodes of The Vampire Diaries?

Oh, the blond guy. I thought you were talking about Elena's drug dealing brother.
He was, Jeremy is Elena's brother and is played by Steven R. McQueen. The blond guy is Matt, Elena's ex and the brother of Vicky, Jeremy's druggie love interest.

Seriously, just watch the entire episodes and don't skip anything until you at least know who the characters are. How is a show supposed to hold your interest, if you don't watch half of it. It doesn't sound like you were really giving The Vampire Diaries a chance.
There was another thread where several people told you that the start of the show isn't that great, but it's worth watching it and believe me, I completely understand the urge to fast forward early Jeremy scenes, but if you endure them know, you will appreciate the changes in the character much more.

I knew that Steve McQueen's grandson was in this show and I just assumed he was the blond guy! :rommie: That guy looks more like McQueen...

It's supposed to grab my interest immediately, and TVD didn't. It's not my job to like a show, it's the show's job to be something I'll like. I usual dump shows that fail to do this - I'm giving this show a lot more of a chance than is my habit, mainly because of the few elements I find sort of interesting. I don't find Jeremy interesting in the least, so if he's magically different in future episodes, I won't mind that one bit, nor care why it happened.

You're right, but I think the situation is a little bit different with this show, because you were told of its problems before you started it. You should have and probably did expect that it would not start out as the greatest show ever, the fans literally told you that the first third of the season is not very good, so forgive me if all you get for realizing that it's really not that good is a big, fat "Well, Duh!" ;)

Please give it a real chance, the show really deserves it and becomes much better. It's unfortunate that it starts the way it does.
If you like the history of the town and Damon there's a lot for you to like in the later episodes and the teen angst is reduced greatly, although it never goes away completely.

Nah, I have the same policy for all shows. I don't see why I should give any of them a break, considering that I'm not being paid to watch them. If a show has deficiencies, why should I cut it any slack for that? The show creators should have eliminated the deficiencies before the show made it to the screen.

I don't recall the advice I got being very specific about which episodes or parts of seasons were good or bad before I started watching. I wasn't even sure it got better in S2, or if so, what "better" means. (If it means less teenage bullshit and more historical stuff, which apparently is the case, then that's an acceptable definition of "better.")

I'm always curious why anyone should give a crap about what shows I watch or don't watch. I don't have a Nielsens box so my watching or not watching won't hurt or help you in any material way.

Why beg someone to watch any show? What's in it for you?

Temis:

I got hooked during season two, around ep 5. My sisters, brother-in-law and mother watch the show. I kept seeing odd moments, and was amused by "Boone." I would plop down and watch a few minutes to "keep up with" Damon.

In season 2 the show really hits high gear.

All of the families that have been there awhile have history and season 2 really delves into that. I will try to explain without spoiling.

The Gilberts have history with the vamps, etc.
The Bennent's history as witches is talked about and shown.
There is an explanation as to why Elena and Katherine look alike with flashbacks. Nina D. rocks as Katherine. She is such a bitch.
There is something going on with the Lockwoods.

The show flashes back the the 1800s and earlier even the 1500s?

The actor that shows up as Elijah is a real treat. Love that guy.

Damon and Alaric have the funniest bromance in history. I won't say more than that because it may spoil the reveal of how unlikely a dynamic duo they make.

If you can plod through the teen angst in season one, season two has great payoff.

I think several of the actors really grow into their roles. Caroline used to annoy me but now I love her. I still think Tyler is a dick but the actor is doing a great job with the character. And as others have said, Jeremy stops being a little bitch and becomes interesting.

Keep it up. Little throw away lines do have payoff later.

That is what I like about the show. When I think why in the Hell don't they do X? Someone thinks of it and X happens. The characters do stupid things but the writers don't dumb down their characters to serve plot. I like that.

The Temis-ator :guffaw:

Is Jeremy Elena's brother? I've been zapping every scene where he appears so I never caught his name.

Yes...but there is more to their family history that will be revealed later in the 1st season.
And Jeremy stops being annoying after awhile (He's Steve McQueen's Grandson, BTW)

I always wondered about that. It was just so funny to me to see that name in the credits. It is Steve McQueen but not the STEVE MCQUEEN! :rommie:

I don't give a crap what shows you watch, but instead of dumping VD you created this thread and specifically talked about what you don't like about it and the few things you do enjoy. It's only natural that fans will show up to encourage you to stick with the show if the things you don't like are played down after a few episodes and the things you like are played up.
And I didn't beg you to watch the show, I just added "please" because I thought it would make it sound nicer and not like a demand.

You should give some of them a break because we're not living in a perfect world where every pilot is awesome and the show stays that way and never loses momentum. You know how network tv works, shows can and do improve over time (okay, most don't and only get worse) and it's petty to not give them a break because they weren't perfect from the start.

I don't recall the advice I got being very specific about which episodes or parts of seasons were good or bad before I started watching.
Maybe I remember it wrong, but wasn't that you who created the "True Blood/Vampire Diaries, which one should I give a chance?" thread? I remember several people in that thread stating that VD is better, but you would have to suffer through bad episodes at the start, which is quite specific.

Temis: Are you still watching?

Yep, I finally saw the first "historical episode!" (and the first ep where I managed to keep my finger off the ff button :rommie:) Very interesting, a few thoughts...

-If they've hinted that Catherine is a Union sympathizer (being in the church that was burned down), what does that imply about her relationship with Damon, that dirty secesh*?

-I can't see Damon giving a flip about the Confederacy, or any other political movement, for real. Was it all just a fun adventure (until the bullets start flying)? Or was he a very different person "before"? (I've interpreted the very different personalities of the brothers as a hint that vampirism doesn't change your personality but just enhances what already exists. Or is there a more interesting explanation for the difference?)

-Speaking of bullets flying, what might happen if Damon were mortally wounded, with Catherine his only route to "survival"? Just wondering if that's how it all went down. Seems like Damon is in a very high-risk occupation where such things are likely to occur. (I'm probably remembering another vampire story where something like that happened...Anne Rice perhaps?)

-The costuming department was remiss in giving Damon such a new-looking uniform, considering he was "on leave" and not a new recruit. They should have stomped on it and dragged it through the mud a lot to give it more authenticity. I did notice that Damon's hair looked like it hadn't been washed in a month.

-Speaking of hair, I like Stefan's look a whole lot more in flashbacks. I know they do the slicked-back look to convey the sense of him being repressed, but it's not at all flattering. :(

-Was the very well dressed black "maid" in Catherine's carriage one of Bonnie's witchy ancestresses? Hmm.

And on other topics:

-I keep seeing the Made in Georgia logo at the end of episodes. I'm sure I recognized a location outside Vancouver (a kind of treehouse-in-the-cedars place with a high footbridge over a stream) in an early ep, and the forests strike me as too piney/cedar-y to be anyplace in the South. But the flashback scenes seemed more geographically plausible. Are the flashbacks being shot in Georgia?

-if Stefan is surviving entirely on chipmunks and other woodland creatures, he must be eating a whole scad of them to measure up to one human being per night (which seems to be Damon's diet). I imagine the target market for this show would rather see Stefan snack on Elena than a fuzzy bunny. Do we ever see him eating any rodents, raccoons etc? (Don't tell me any spoilers about him falling off the wagon and goes for bigger prey.)

*wow, got the spelling right on first try!

^
I believe they filmed the pilot in the Vancouver area and then the rest of the series in Georgia. I could be wrong but I thought they spelled it Katherine. :p

I'm lucky I can remember anyone's names much less how to spell them. :rommie:

Other than the fun of the historical flashbacks and Damon's antics, and looking forward to this Alaric dude who will show up eventually (I checked IMDB -), a major reason for me to keep watching is waiting patiently for Saint Stefan to fall off the wagon. That guy is entirely too prim and proper. Maybe they haven't pulled the trigger on that yet, but it's an inevitable plot twist, isn't it?

Katherine Pierce (born Katerina Petrova)...and Elena is the Petrova doppelgänger...which I never get tired of hearing in S2. :rommie:

I think you will like S2 Temis. :bolian:

Is there something funny about liking historical sf/f stuff? :D Cuz that's one of my pet interests. Can't wait for Abe Lincoln: Vampire Killer. Cowboys and Aliens is also in that line. Wish Supernatural would do that Old West spinoff series...

I never heard of that series, but from my dim memories of Dark Shadows, didn't that show also have a modern character with a historical doppleganger? Was it Angelique?
