Hey, I never noticed that before....

Why no pockets? Are they a relic of the past? I can definitely understand the value of having removable pieces of a uniform in case of an emergency, such as a belt which can become a tourniquet/sling/bandage if needed, or sleeves that can tear off if they get caught in something dangerous.

The idea for futuristic clothing was that it should be super-streamlined. So no pockets. When they were creating the show, Roddenberry actually had to dial it back, because the "outfit of the future" was starting to sound like long underwear. He did the right thing on TOS, but forgot his style wisdom on TMP— and we got a toddler's footed pajamas with, to make it worse, a pretty clear topography of the masculine appendage. Very bad for action heroes in a movie not rated X.

Joan Winston wrote up her "Turnabout Intruder" set visit in the book Star Trek Lives! (1975). When Jimmy Doohan had a pack of cigarettes visible in his Starfleet breeches, she said she thought the uniforms didn't have pockets. And he said "You'd be surprised what other little secrets we have."

I just noticed how affordable it was to dress for high office on Gideon. Forget the tailored $3000 suits on presidents and network anchormen— these guys shop the clearance rack at the Gap. They've got it figured out! :bolian:

Another thing: if you're dressing the actors for $4.95 apiece, why go to the time and expense of applying bald caps in Makeup? Because the production still had its pride, and what they could do to stage an alien culture, they did.

No money, no stuff, no personal possessions, no theft.

Carrying things on your back, playing keep away with communal property, hoarding, is probably seen as Vulgar.

Protest over a banned board member being briefly reinstated. Oddly, they kept actively posting on Twitter, which was reversing many more bans against users who'd been kicked out for similar reasons at the same time.
That's not so odd. Even with folks flocking away from Twitter under its current management, it still has a much bigger reach than this place does, and the Fact Trek account has over 1000 followers.
