Hey, I never noticed that before....

Just saw a clip of the Enemy Within, and it looks like all of the bridge crew were armed with phasers... which seems kind of odd... Dr. MCcoy didn't have that, so just curious thing.. did that happen in any other TOS episodes?

KIrk did a ship-wide announcement. Maybe after that, all on-duty personnel were armed.

McCoy being medical....maybe not so, apart from landing parties.

Did he have one in The Man Trap when shooting the Salt Vampire, or was that Kirk's?

Interesting. It seems a bit weird that everyone keeps wearing phasers even when Kirk-negative is restrained in sickbay – I guess they all read the script and know he's going to escape!

In this episode, phasers are issued to Kirk-positive, Spock, Wilson (until Kirk-negative steals it), and apparently everyone manning a bridge station. Those who don't appear to have one include McCoy, Scotty, Wilson (later in the transporter room), Rand, and Bobby (who carries the poor doggy to autopsy).

As to your question, how often McCoy is armed when others are can be hard to determine, since a Phaser I hides under a uniform pretty well. (I suspect that the actors aren't actually wearing them until they need to produce one from under their tunic.) On Janus VI, our three heroes all seem unarmed, but then Kirk and Spock each have a P1 as soon as they need it. Did McCoy have one, too? Probably impossible to say for sure since P1s emerge as needed.

My gut feeling is that it was pretty normal for McCoy to generally not carry a phaser when others are (usually being busy with a tricorder, scanner, and/or medical pouch), but not always. For example, he beams down sporting a P2 in The Apple, and he produces a P1 in Operation–Annihilate!. (The latter episode has an oddity in that Zahra is wearing a phaser belt, but nothing is attached to it.)

Swiped it from Kirk.
