Hey, I never noticed that before....

It’s still there when McCoy bolts from the bridge, but it’s gone when she beams down to the planet, however now she has a black waist belt.

“City On The Edge Of Forever”

Something I can’t figure out…Uhura is wearing a black ‘arm band’ near the braid on the left hand sleeve of her Starfleet uniform.

I think it was a holster for her radio earpiece. Like they were trying something and decided not to stick with it. That's my best theory.

The belt was for communicator and phaser. It had the black velcro patches that would never match her red uniform.

Why no pockets? Are they a relic of the past? I can definitely understand the value of having removable pieces of a uniform in case of an emergency, such as a belt which can become a tourniquet/sling/bandage if needed, or sleeves that can tear off if they get caught in something dangerous.

It was one of Roddenberry's odd ideas. He thought there wouldn't be the need for pockets or clothing fasteners (zippers, buttons, etc.) in the future. Thus, they had to have the velcro belts for phasers and communicators.

I suppose it's not that odd if the fabric can open and fasten when you pull it apart and close it again. Like gel or something.
I agree about the fasteners, but it made it difficult for the 20th Century costumers.

The lack of pockets is the really odd thing. How do you carry around your gear unless everything can efficiently fit on a velcro belt, or a shoulder strap like the tricorders?

Anything you need at the time is provided by a call up to the ship, and presto, it's beamed down to you.
