Hey, I never noticed that before....

Nope! Sorry, Phase! I remember the guy who attacked Bones but the other scene I've only ever seen the once and I don't think it's the same dude! :techman:

What is the point of the black sash around Garrovick's waist? If it's to signify his rank as head of security then I don't recall Giotto or Stan Dickerson having one?

Garrovick isn't the only one wearing the sash in "Obsession":

Though later on he's not:

Maybe it denotes "I'm a member of a Security Detail and on duty " because we see the sash again in the 2nd season:
The guy(s) that enter to breakup the bar fight appear to be wearing it.

And the redshirt survivor in "By Any Other Name"

Yes, it's a phaser belt worn when on duty. I don't know why they wore them outside their jerseys when senior officers wore them slightly under their jerseys. Are they wider because they're supposed to be carrying additional phaser power packs?

Dunno, but the look brings to mind US Navy sailors on shore patrol, with the white/green web belts for the holster and billy.

The early phaser 2 belt was brown and flared on the "hoister" side, later replaced with the black phaser/utility belt. I suppose that security wore them outside their shirts with their shirts tucked in so that nothing would interfere with their quick draw. Women wore them too, outside their skirts for obvious reasons...

They probably came up with the equipment belts for security because most Velcro(TM) came in black, and it was easier than trying to color match the uniforms. Remember, the conceit is that the equipment is supposed to magnetically adhere to their uniforms.

Yep, most viewers are focused on the actors, and we favor the foreground over the background (where nothing is expected to happen on a TV show). I never noticed the rock before, either.

Director Ralph Senensky was struck by how small the Stage 10 planet set was on "Metamorphosis." He even used a wide-angle lens to create that illusion that Cochrane was far away when first seen.

And he had to shoot through a rocky overhang to conceal the top of the cyclorama, the studio ceiling, etc.
That shot of Cochrane greeting the shuttle is the most cinematic of TOS since the Rigel VII fortress.

It works in 16:9, too.

JB! It is absolutely the same guy. I'm talking (in the shot of the rec room from Let That Be) about the guy in red sitting to Hadley's left.

Same dude.

Right. Also, only regulars had the velcro sewn into their pants, so extras playing security guards wouldn't cut that mustard. This is sort of paralled in TNG when you saw, even as late as S6 and S7, extras in the super-tight skintight uniforms from S1 (and maybe S2) walking around. Picard et al. received the less painful uniforms at the beginning of S3 or whenever, but extras didn't rate. Same thing with the regulars in Star Trek getting the velcro at (I think) the beginning of S2. And the velcro didn't work for the women's uniforms, so they always wore belts if they carried phasers or communicators. (Although interestingly, at one point in The Apple Landon drops her phaser, then picks it up and places it on her skirt area, not on the belt, and it sticks!!)

They had a narrow black belt in the 1st season that we see in "Tomorrow is Yesterday", where Kirk and Sulu hand them over to the Air Sargeant, and "Space Seed," on the door guard.
But a cursory look through Trekcore indicates that the security cummerbund :D may have first showed up in "Mirror, Mirror."
