Hey, I never noticed that before....

One notable problem with the TAS Main Engineering background isn't so much a problem with the background itself, as it is a scaling problem. Scotty is just too freakin' tall there. They even have him leaning over to reach down to the controls. The second most notable thing wrong about it is that the perspective is all jacked. I also agree about the colors, but that's 3rd or lower on my list of issues about it.

I love how James Blish referred to that as the "Forced Perspective Unit"
Was this on the side, or part of actual book text in a story? If the latter, then he was a fool. There is only full size structure(s) on the ship. If not, then we also have small children serving in the squat ceiling height areas of the engineer room in ST:TMP. Nah, the intent is for no force perspective structures on the Enterprise at any time. Now, how long are the non-forced perspective units is still up for debate. :techman:

It was one of the Blish adaptations, but I can't remember which episode. I'll try to search for it for you, but I almost dropped the book at that one, it was so funny.

I'm assuming there was a note to that effect in the script but forced perspective referred to the pipes being smaller to make it look deep on camera, not an actual thing. He may have thought it sounded good, or just didn't realize how silly it sounds, or care.

I was just thinking the same. It looks like a forerunner of the warp cores on the Enterprise-D, Voyager, Defiant, etc.
Never see any action in the glass tube. I notice that the triangular base with three balls is similar like one of the double triangular doohickey (DTD) bases. Here's the new possible arrangement:

In For The World Is Hollow, when our boys first encounter the orange cylinders on Yonada, I just noticed in the upper left corner there is another cylinder in the background on top of a mountain.

You can barely notice it in this screencap.

I checked the comparable old-DVD screencap, and it's in the original as well. Sometimes TOS-R sweetens the picture, but this was on set.

I always remembered the tubes as black or greyish too but that might be because I grew up with the show in the old stylish b/w!

Awesome catch! That must be for sky-touching. ;)
