Hey, I never noticed that before....

The other thing I noticed (and this is a little off-color, and noticed less because of format and more because I'm an adult now) is the giant phallic rock that Kirk wields in the caves during What Are Little Girls Made Of. I mean I honestly cried out with delight when I watched that episode a few months ago.

Ah, an ensign....Pictures of Kirk brandishing that rock have been something of a meme around here for years.

If it's any consolation, I never noticed it either when watching endless reruns on TV over the deacdes. I didn't even know about Doohan's "deleted" digit until maybe 10 years ago or more recent. I finally noticed the shot in question when either I read someone else's obsevation on the matter (and then popped to TrekCore to see for myself) or when I was reading a page at Nyrath's "Atomic Rockets" site. Honestly, I'm not sure which. If the latter, I was reading Nyrath's entries about personal gear. I reach a section about pocket sized "tools" ans Nyrath presented examples like the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, Gary Seven's "servo", and the tuning fork inspired gizmos from "Fantastic Journey" and the TV version of "Logan's Run". Nyrath also presented a series of frames of SCotty's "magnetic wrench". Having finally heard about Doohan's finger by this time, I noticed one particular frame and realized, "Whoa! There it is! Or rather, isn't!"

Now, I understand Doohan tried "hide" the injury, either for personal reasons or possibly at the request of the production (I'm not sure which). But looking back, I kinda' wish he hadn't. Something like that could have actually worked in the character's favor, a "hint" of his past. Oh, no real need to draw attention to it like any on camera exposition or backstory, just don't make an active effort to hide it. I rather like the notion Scotty suffered an occupational accident when he younger and not as experienced or cautious.

Sincerely,

Bill

Much like Gary Burghoff, of the feature film and television show M*A*SH, who's left hand never developed fully yet he was able to keep it out of view, most of the time ..

Wow. I never knew that.

I just watched "Whom Gods Destroy" and noticed that the stunt double Shatner fights with is an incredible ringer for him. If you crawl through the fight frames, you can see the guy's face and it's amazing. It helps that he's wearing a Shatner hairpiece, but he's a ringer nevertheless. :bolian:

Yeah, that was always my favorite Kirk vs Kirk fight because of how closely they got the double. Even back in the 80's I'd freeze the tape to try to catch the guy's face. Too bad they couldn't or wouldn't use him for all of Shatner's stunts. It would have been a LOT more difficult to spot when it wasn't Shatner.

Wow. I never knew that.

Burghoff has said that he almost ALWAYS had something in his hand - and as company clerk, it made sense for him to have a clipboard...a pen...or a hundred other little knick knacks in that hand all the time.

I was always puzzled when people would talk about Nimoy's "jaundiced" make-up, and how Spock was meant to look so pale -- his skin tones always looked fairly normal to me... until the remastered DVDs, and especially the blu-rays. Then I was like, Ah! I see it now. :p

What may (or may not) be the best view of James Doohan's hand, sans finger, is when Scotty walks into the rec room with an armload of tribbles in TTWT. His right hand is higher up, and right there for all to see.

I never noticed this, and in fact I never knew about Doohan's missing digit until I met him in person in 1985. I agree it would have been an interesting detail to incorporate into the show, but hey, the '60s was a different time. :/

I think it's the outdoor daylight sequences in City on the Edge of Forever - in the Blu-Rays, Spock actually looks green! It's the only time I've noticed such an extreme shade on him.

Memory Alpha, which is pretty meticulous and thorough about identifying every actor who ever appeared on screen, still has this stunt double unidentified. There's a mystery afoot!

Later they could have wrapped Simon Pegg's corresponding digit in bluescreen cloth and CGd it out. ;)

How about Spock walking with a limp after they first beam down, and then it suddenly disappears.
Which episode? Leonard Nimoy had a slight limp that plagued him all his life(watch Spock walk the corridors if you don't believe me), and he played it up a couple of times, most notably in The Cage. I always felt Spock must have been one of the injured mentioned.

That explains why he played it up(though Spock was supposed to be downplaying it). It's funny, you watch people walk, and about half have some degree of limp. I wonder if it's because no one's legs are exactly the same length or proportion?

When Elaan of Troyous runs into the other room (an unseen bathroom?), part of her costume is torn. Then when she comes out, it is fixed.

In Where No Man Has Gone Before, look at the blonde on the bridge when the mini-explosions start. She isn't cringing, she's sort of playfully smiling.

I always knew the bridge panels were "wild", but for some reason, I never really noticed the edge of the console near Spock's station when they pulled out the adjoining console for shots. There is something about the blu-ray that really makes this stand out more than before. With the aspect ratio of the new TVs and the remastering of the show from the negatives, are we just able to see more of the "edge" of the screen?

In Space Seed, when they are trying to get Khan out of the chamber, a phaser gets dropped (Shatner's, if memory serves), and De Kelly sort of looks up at the cameral like he's expecting the director to cut.

Yes. Shatner's phaser falls off of his belt when he smashes the glass. You can see Kelley's eyes dart back and forth between the floor and Khan's cryogenic chamber as the chamber slides out of the wall. When Kelley finally spots the phaser, he discreetly grabs it & saves the take. Way to go, De! :techman:

I love this one! De Kelley really does look like he expects the take to be called off. :)

I like that they used that take. Phasers fall off of belts all of the time in the real world.

There's similar scene in TNG's "Skin of Evil." As the landing party run toward the oil slick monster, Geordi's phaser comes out of its holster and plops unceremoniously to the ground. :)
