I was just watching the old theatrical serial “Dick Tracy vs Crime Inc.” (1941) and I noticed that when the criminal activates the invisibility device in Chapter 3, the sound was the same warbling sound as Trek used in “Dagger of the Mind” for the mind wipe machine. Could the TOS sound editors have used stock sound from the Republic library?
As long as we're mentioning our sound editors, boy they did a great job. I can't remember if it was
Gene Roddenberry or
Irwin Allen, but somebody on a vintage sci-fi show insisted that "everything should make a sound." And I think that's right. It gives more reality and substance to a prop. It fleshes out the picture. It helps you
believe that a whirling light fixture could beam thoughts into Kirk's head.
This reminds me of a
joke song written by a film's composer, who felt that excess sound fx were wiping out his music. Sung to the tune of
Goldfinger:
Printmaster...
Sound and suits,
Alone with the mixing crew--
There goes that cue!
A music disaster...
You'll hear screams
And hip hop and bombs galore--
But not my score.
When on screen the lead actress comes round,
Every hair on her head makes a sound,
But her theme that I wrote, and I love the most
is TOAST,
Cause it's the Printmaster,
That end title I slaved over
Now is gone--
In its place, Celine Dion!
But we must move faster,
So I'll go, but first I'll beg on my knees...
Mixers please!
Turn down that sneeze!
Use your mutes!
Lose the guns, raise the flutes!
Oh, I'll never win!
The 3-6 mafia just walked in.
Drop that crowd!
Make me proud!
Leave me LOOOUUUD!
